Just curious to see how many different types of steels are in other forumites collections. Mine isn't that expansive (yet) with just 6.
1095
ATS-34
BG-42
420HC
440A
425MOD
And a few unknowns
Also, have you ever found yourself buying or wanting a knife not because you like the knife itself, but because it's made with a steel that you dont have?

I haven't bought a knife because of the steel, but I have thought about it in a few cases. :)

I'm still looking for the right folder in Talonite or Stellite 6K. I must have too specific an idea of what I'm looking for. <sigh>

Interesting question. Having many different steels is part of the fun of knife collecting. I never tried to list them before, here goes:

Forged Carbon Steels

1. 1075
2. 1084
3. 1095
4. O1
5. W1
6. L6
7. 5160
8. File and rasp steel (probably W1)
9. 52100 (both differentially heat-treated and all-hard blades)
10. Pattern Welded steel (many steel combinations and patterns)

Stain Resistant Steels

1. 440C
2. ATS34
3. CPM154
4. D2
5. Sandvik 12C27
6. 420V/S90V

I guess that comes to at least 16 for me and I'm not counting the dozen or so production folders (Gerber, Buck, Boker, and SAK) which are made from 'unknown' stainless steels. :)
