Someone mentioned to get the 1000 grit, but I also noticed there's a stone with 1000/6000. Should I grab the stone with 1000/6000 or do I just need the 1000 grit? It was a Japanese stone but I forgot the name.
It is prob a king or nagara stone if its a japanese water stone.
But anyways to your question. I would say .... depends. If you are the type to dull your edges all the way i would get another lower grit stone prob a 400-600 japanese water stone. Also if you are an edge snob and want a polished edge you will need a 6000 grit stone. The 1000 grit stone still leave a little tooth.
Also note that the japanese and american grit measure is different. This confused the hell outta me when i first found out......
but yeah if you just want one stone the person who recommended you the 1000 is right. it is course enough to restore a dull edge and fine enough to give a reasonable edge finish...... It just saves times and you get better results if you have more stones =) good luck
