Some have had knives confiscated and others have
been charged. Anyone want to leave a story of being
searched and under the circumstances it was done?

This was probably 23 years ago, something like that. A friend was driving, we were coming out of the community college, got pulled over. I don't remember why. My friend had a "counterfeit firearm" which is like a realistic prop, in the car. He immediately announced its presence and it was taken out, examined, and confirmed as not a real gun. I was asked if I had any thing on my, and I replied that I had a lock blade. This was taken out and put on the hood of the car. One cop's chatting with my friend, the other's with me, and he keeps looking at the knife. It was a Gerber, as I recall, that had a sort of unique lock, a sliding rod that went into the end of the tang when it was open with a sliding control for this on the side of the knife. I saw his interest and said "its a beauty, isn't it?" This started a very nice discussion of knives and my actually retrieving the knife and demonstrating the lock mechanism to him. The knife wasn't really such a beauty but it all went pretty well. I wasn't the one getting a ticket, after all.

The one time in college when I actually did get arrested (trespassing, that was over twenty years ago, too) I didn't have anything but a mini mag light on me... which made them think I was a burgler. Ah well...

Searched many times as a teenager. Was a general he!!raiser.
Never caught with anything so no charges

Two years ago, I got searched by the morons in the TSA at the Salt Lake Airport. They pulled me, my wife, and my three kids out of line to make sure we weren't "terrorists". The led us to a roped off area that was right in front of everyone, had us take off our shoes, then wanded and searched everyone. You should have seen my kids, at that time ages 3, 5, and 7, standing spread eagle while these s.o.b.s wanded them. I guess you can't be too careful these days, you never know when you are going to run into some blond haired, blued eyed, 3 and 5 year old terrorists. Since then, I've never flown again and I hope all of the airlines go out of business, at least unless they stop hassling law abiding citizens. :grumpy:

For those of you who don't know, the TSA has quotas on how many people they have to search. I don't know what the total number of people is, but I do know that they are only allowed to stop two people of arab descent per flight. God knows they wouldn't want to profile anyone, even though about 99.9% of all airline terrorists have been Muslim males between the ages of 20 and 30yrs old.

There is no doubt that the TSA in Salt Lake searched us precisely because they knew we were not a threat. Some security... :jerkit:

I've had a CWP and have carried a pistol daily for 21 years.
I've never been searched or questioned.
I carry big guns, usually more than one.

I've been told I look like a cop.
I stay out of bars unless I'm working "Bouncing" and places where I could get into trouble.
If you look like a scumbag to a cop.
You're going to get treated like one.
I'm not saying it's right but it's a fact of life.
Tats, earings, long hair, you're going to be veiwed more suspiciously than someone without.
Younger guys will take more crap than older.
Make sure you look people in the eyes and a smile or nod of the head won't hurt.

I carry folders regularly and much of the time a fixed blade particularly when wearing jackets in the cool season.

About the only place where people are searched are at the airports. While they havn't found anything on me at airport security, sometimes the search is excessive. Why the heck do they need to have me remove my belt and suspenders, when they can do a pat down instead.

Airline security will continue to be a failier until they properly screen checked luggage for bombs, and screen passengers ensuring that they have a hand gun and fresh ammo. It's doubtful that terrorists could take over a plane full of armed passengers. Once that kind of requirement takes place on global level, airline terrorism will be a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, to reach such a concenses on a global level is about as impossible as getting anyone to agree on anything anymore. So the stupidity will continue.

I got searched by a Philly cop at a U2 concert. He grabbed me while still mounted on his rather large horse. He "walked" me for about 10 feet before dismounting and searching me. For some reason he took issue with me shooting bottle rockets out of a beer bottle. He took my knife (a Case trapper) my pack of cigs and my Zippo. I was way drunk and acting like an ass so I guess I deserved some of what I got. He could have arrested me. I was actually shooting the bottle rockets at the limos driving to the underground parking garage. Not one of my smarter moves....but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

funny story, glad you didnt get arrested.

actually....i just remembered another time i got searched. i drove to a bar in Hershey and had to pee really bad. There was a line at the door and I knew I couldn't wait. I jumped into a big bush and starting peeing when a spot light suddenly hit me. I guess the cops, who's station is directly across the street from the club, go figure, had seen me jump in the bushes. I got searched and given a fine for peeing in public. The fine was soooooooooo worth it.......I had to go really bad.

I was patted down at a recent white stripes concert, as was everyone else coming through the doors.
however, I was anything but impressed with their search- I couldnt have gotten a pistol past easily, but a few knives would have been easy.
fortunately, i remembered to leave my folders in the car, just had my small SAK which they didnt even notice.

I think the question was more about being stopped and searched by the police for a reason other than airport security/ entrance to a location. In NYC I am searched everyday entering office buildings and governmant buildings that the company I work for owns, so I am use to not carrying any/ knives/guns/etc ( even though I have a permit). The rules for many private property locations is a total ban on knives/guns. I do not consider these checks true searches as they are a part of NYC daily life in the post 911 era.
I must agree with Chris that the TSA checkers are a mixed bag as far as training and the quaility of their work goes. I travel about ten times a year for work and about six of those are from NYC to Cleveland. In NYC, the workers are far more rude and lack training, and the Cleveland crew far more professional. I have not ever been searched because I was stopped, which I attribute to a great amount of luck in my teen years, and my far more mature attitude now ( being a former NYC LEO also helped me undersatnd what not to do)....

25+ years ago, a buddy and I were on our way to a reggae concert. We parked in one of those big parking garages, passed a bottle of Myers rum back and forth to get a good buzz going and then headed out. Got about 50ft. when a police car comes screaming around, stops, and one of the officers yells, "We saw that!" and orders us back to my car. I'm thinking, "saw what?" They never did say what they supposedly observed, just searched us, I guess hoping to find drugs (didn't find any). Didn't care about my pocket knife, a Gerber Paul. When they found some free drink cards from the club where we both worked (Pierce St. Annex in SF) in my vest pocket, one of the officers asked, "You guys work there?" and when we replied in the affirmative, suddenly we were OK and free to go.

...being a former NYC LEO also helped me understand what not to do.

That's part of the reason I was disgusted with the TSA. I am relatively sure that they saw my police badge when they scanned my backpack, then selected us because of it, knowing that we would not be a threat.

As another example of this out of control airport "security", you may have seen the story about a year ago when the Philadelphia TSA searched a Marine honor guard in dress blues, who were escorting a casket back from Iraq. I'll bet those TSA fools were really proud of themselves.

The only time I was searched unexpectedly was when I was arrested for curfew when I was 14. No knives, but 2 screwdrivers and a flashlight, the cop said were burglary tools (his supervisor later disagreed).

I have long hair, dress in all black, spiked leather jacket, earring, knee-high leather boots. Cops always eyeball me when they walk or drive by, but never stop or say anything. I don't use drugs or do anything illegal, but sometimes I go to places where other people do. I've been pulled over 3 times as a driver, and 3 times as a passenger (all deserved), and never searched or hassled. If I spent much time outside of California I might get more "attention," but no problems here so far.
