Dealers aside, how many knives did you buy this year? Do you keep them or trade them? Also, do you buy knives in the same price range or do your purchases vary greatly? Use or collect? I'm curious to see how others enjoy our common interest.
I myself have a decent amount of purchases this year, but I use each knife quite a bit. I have mostly fixed blades, and aside from the Cold Steel Bushman bowie in my truck, all are custom carbon steel workers. In terms of blade types and lengths, I have a 4.25" Finnish puukko from Lapin as a utility knife, razor sharp scandi grind because it's bulletproof, a 2.5" spearpoint necker with osage scales and a 4" clipped hunter with an ebony and stag handle, both from Randy Nance, both flat ground 01.
Rounding out the fixed blades are a pair made by a crazy Kiwi named Kyley who has an amazing ethos and philosophy in terms of rigorous testing and unswerving dedication to making the best possible working knives he can. The first is a 4+" bushcraft/hunter drop point in 01 with lignum vitae scales and convexed, the other is an 8" khukri/bolo style chopper in 01, a true beast.
As I said, my fixed blades are workers, either cleaning game or cutting rope and leather or whittling. I do carry folders for self defense and utility purposes where a fixed blade is a no-no. Currently I have a Kershaw Leek for leisure and an abused Gerber Torch II tanto.
Prices ranged from $33 to $350, and that's about my limit. There are so many beautiful knives, true pieces of art, for sale and display on just this website alone, it's amazing and sometimes agonizing. In the end, however, my true pleasure comes from using the knives I own. How about you?
