I thought I would start a differnt kinda thread, most lately have been ones like whats in your collection, whats your EDC etc. But i thought i would start a thread about what we use our knives for, this may be useful when argueing with sheeple as it will undoubtably provide a variety of daily uses for knives. Ok just thought about it, since most people have to many knives to list uses for each :) just list knives and uses that you use at least once a week :) Since i only have 6 knives my list will be pretty short:

Custon neck knife by Taz of these forums:

Used as EDC for cutting boxes, plastic straps, fruit for lunch, cutting thread and all other daily light cutting tasks.

PCKS Buck 110 with BG-42:

Used for anyhting thats needs a bigger blade than the 2.5" my neck knife has, used for whittleing(spelling?) Used for skinning and also used extensivly in the kitchen as a small paring knife. Also used for family gatherings where a more tactical knife may look out of place.

Custom 4" Fixed Drop point, also by Taz:

Beater knife, its made with 3/16" L6 and is thick as hell most of the way to the point, this is my pry with, dig hole in ground, cut metal with knife. It has seen A LOT of use/abuse in its time. Even used it to pry a bar from my buddy's truck suspension back into posistion so he could weld it back in place, knife got pretty hot but not hot enough to ruin the HT. Great knife.

BK&T Patrol Machete:

My camping big knife, great chopper, used to chop wood for fire and clear trails.

CRKT M18:

Used to be my EDC till i got the neck knife, now its my back up knife, keep it with my survival kit in my pack.

Thats about it, so what do you guys use your knives for on a daily basis?

Mostly I use them for cutting various things. It seems that so many of them were designed for tasks like that. Kinda funny huh?

Seriously, lots of cardboard boxes (tough on an edge)wire, string, packing bands.

I usually have either a plain small Sebenza or a Microtech Socom in my pocket and a Leatherman WAVE in my laptop case for doing Leatherman style chores.

jmx

PS I don't have a machete type device yet as there's not much brush to clear around here and I've yet to find a legitimate use for my civil war era officer's sword.

Mostly I just carry my AFCK. Not as much now but mainly it would be used for going through cardboard boxes at the warehouse and opening various packages. Also string and rope and that kind of thing. Sometimes when you open the box you end up hitting those staples that hold the box together. Does not do wonders for my edge. Also it's used for camping and fishing.

Previously I carried my EKI CQC7 but the blade shape doesn't have as many utility uses for me.

One of my primary uses for my knives is opening packages containing... more knives! My wife and I are both mail-order addicts so I open a lot of packages and break down a lot of cardboard boxes. I open my mail with a knife in lieu of using my finger and risking a cut on an envelope. Seems prudent these days. I often cut the wrapper off of my lunch. One time I let my wife use my knife to butcher a mango. She didn't rinse it afterward and I eventually got her a special FaberWare paring knife to serve all her mango butchering needs. Last fall I had the unplesant task of tending to a greviously injured animal (a cat) in our neighbourhood. I started wondering if I could humanely euthanize an animal with the little BM940 I had on me. Fortunately it wasn't necessary but it did get me thinking.

Finally, my knife using has also lead me to a great group of guys and gals here on Blade Forums. ;)

Including kitchen knives I have over 100 knives. I'm actually not quite sure what I use them all for. Idon't have that many hands or pockets.

I have a small bunch of knives. I try to keep 2 knives handy, not counting a multitool like the leatherman.

One is always a tactical/fighter, dont fight much, dont want to, dont use them either. The others, what ever they are: Sebenza, Sere 2K, BM710/705... I'll use for anything and everything.

When I was working as an RN in an ER I used my spyderco endura to remove clothing, leather boots/shoes,restraint straps and old dressings from trauma pts. Now I just use them for every day chores like cutting thread, preparing food, boxes and the likes. I also keep a couple of slipjoints razor sharp to castrate animals with. Then I have some larger fixed blades that I use while in the woods and on camping trips. There is never a day that goes by that I don't use a knife for something....

Thanks Dean

I ue my MT mini socom or Vector almost everday for cutting down tape for track practice.

I own a bunch more knives, but I usually carry one of those 2.

Between 250 to 300, if you ask my wife she'll say taking up space and collecting dust although she say's it keeps me outa the Go-Go bars, and Pool Halls, but as far as I go they're mostly for everyday tasks from eating to cleaning gasket material, and trimming sheetrock. Oh yeah and collecting for my mental health, I love the history and the quality that went into most of the old time knives.

I have 12 knives in my stock. They all rotate through my EDC knives depending on what I feel like.

Schrade Middleman (medium stockman) - Bought this 'cause I wanted to get into slipjoints, guess it was a poor choice, the steel is rust monster 1095 so it looks like crap, but hey, it's a user. But you'd think with 1095 you could attain a good edge, I have been unable to get this knife to come to a shaving edge on any blade (even when reprofiled to 15 degrees on my 204) my only guess is that the grind on this must simply suck, so it is my "carry at school" folder, where if harm comes to it it's not that big a deal.
Camillus Enhanced EDC - Got this as a replacement for the 1st generation 154CM EDC I sent in which was more or less unrepairable, I really really like it, tight lock up, sharp blade, and it looks cool :P This is my favorite of my "sheeple-friendly" knives.
Spyderco Native Lightweight - Always loved the ergos on this, the CPM440V blade is nice until you have to sharpen it... which is a hassle, but then becomes nice again :) It's a very comfortable and simple little folder that I very much enjoy.
Kershaw Blackout - The first credible knife I bought for myself, I still really like it, good ergos, good blade design (excellent grind) and the speed-safe is so cool!
Outdoor Edge Zytel Magna - One of the best "tacticals" i've ever seen, especially for the price, it's built like a rock, this one has seen alot of abuse as I used it for my hard use folder, but it's so endearing.
Spyderco Chinook - I've been carrying this alot more lately, as it's my only "high-quality" folder (I love the feel of G10), a very strong folder that is surprisingly sharp for it'd wide blade, the grip is very secure for me and I don't mind the weight. A small note: I recently had to sharpen my Chinook on my standard 204 (I don't have diamond stones), what a P-I-T-A, from now on i'm not buying anymore bowie blades with an rc over 58, they're just too much work.
Not sorry I bought or own the Chinook, but definetely learned from it.
Movin' on to fixed...
Camillus Arclite - it's a nice, thin, expendable neck knife, what can I say? I tend to wear neckies on formal occaisons when my pants won't accomodate clip folders.
Michael Cooper Custom ATS-34 Trail Point neck knife - WOW! This is still the most impressive bang-for-the buck knife i've ever owned. It's convex edge is very impressive and the fit and finish can't be beat, the sheath is also very nice and comfortable, I bought it with an additional belt sheath as well for when I want to carry a sub 3.5" fixed blade non-concealed.
Becker Combat/Utility 7 - It's my hard use work knife, everything i've thrown at it, it's handled with gusto, very strong and hefty (but in a confidence inspiring way) very comfortable sheath, this knife is great for tackling the garden, hacking out ivy and such.
and finally...
Leatherman WAVE - for all my multitool needs, i've never needed another multitool, period.

Kershaw Boa in G2 sheath -- my every-day "not at work" carry.

Brad Duncan Whiplash -- my "at work" carry -- used to open stuff.

Emerson mini-commander -- camping folder

Patton Field Unit -- on my gun belt

Rinaldi TTKK -- lives in the kitchen, also take it camping.

I guess that's about it for knives I "use". I have a bunch more in my knife case, and easily as many scattered around for special-purpose stuff, but they don't see much use.

Mike

My serious collection includes
MT/L-UDT, MT Vector, MT LCC manual, Masters of Defense Lady Hawk, Benchmade 710, Benchmade mini reflex, Spyderco Viele, Spyderco Lum Tanto Titanium, Spyderco Civilian, Spyderco William Goddard light weight. William Henry S-09 evolution.

I also have 14 CRKT knives of various types including 2 duplicates that are my primary carry peices. On duty I tend to carry my Apache 7013M in "Mil" finish and off duty I carry the Apache 7012 LE

I plan on getting a Protech Tr-3 black on black and probably a Jazz handled knife but I'm undecided as to what model. I like to have at least 2 knives from each manufacturer in my collection so a William Henry carbon Fiber may be in my future.

I use mine for general cutting like box tape, envelopes, opening bags of chips, the occasional flexcuff ;) I have to carry a knife as I am trained as a first responder and it is possible I may need to cut a seat belt or other type of webbing.

YoungCutter - I have a Schrade Middleman as well. Had to reprofile with my course diamond hone, but after that and the sharpmaker, it has a hair-popping edge, as sharp as any other knife I've owned. It does require some maintenance but I think the patina adds a lot of character.

Have about a dozen, but 3 dominate for regular use

Gerber LST is favorite EDC. Open package & mail, clip newspaper & magazine articles, open new paper for the copier, slice food (apples, sandwiches, etc). Love the light weight, stiff solid feel, non-threatening appearance, easy carry.

Occasionally switch to 3" Opinel stainless for EDC - incredibly light, cool simple design, round handle rides like a dream in the pocket, if blade was alittle heftier would be EDC (except then it wouldn't be so light, would it?!)

Wenger PocketTech mini-SAK on keychain. Don't use blade (LST is for that) but use the phillips and the small flat screwdriver all the time (eyeglass screws, electronics components, etc.) plus the scissors for trimming threads & torn fingernails & snagged clothing Not to plug any supplier, but this is the most all-around useful one I carry; see pix at: http://www.mytoolstore.com/swiss/16926.html or
http://www.mytoolstore.com/swiss/16958.html

Native Lightweight & Snap-it EMT are weekend carries for heavier work - yardwork & hiking/camping

Come to think of it, since these 3 or 4 do everything I ever need.... why do you suppose I have twice as many more in the drawer, and another 3 or 4 on the wish list????
