Curious as to how many knives you take or carry with you on a camping trip?

One neck knife or a knife lashed to PFD; one big knife for chopping and similar uses; one Swiss Champ. Sometimes one more for cooking, depending on which big knife I take and which neck.

One six to eight inch fixed blade depending on gear. One four inch folder, usually my Police model cause the darn thing's still cutting, and my SAK.

2 or 3.....
usually a hunter with a 6" blade, a small fixed blade(6"overall) and a folder in the survival kit and often a multi tool also.

There is no such thing as "good enough", either your work is good or it is not. How is your work?

1) Start with a good SAK
2) Add a lock back folder (usually a Buck
110)
3) Add a medium fixed blade (about 6-7
inches in blade length)
4) Add a 3/4 size axe
5) Add a Machete

On many short backpacking trips I seldom go beyond item 1. But depending on conditions, I will add the rest as required (the load would be distributed among group).

This weekend I took SAK camper and trailmaster models, a Schrade folding lockback, and a SpecPlus SP-5.

I used the pen blade of the SAK camper most. The SP-5 was used for cutting seasoned birch, poplar and pine for firewood. I used the trailmaster's saw a little. The rest went unused.

Some people, when they go camping, carry knives because some camp chores require them. Sometimes I think I have it bass ackwards, I go camping so I can try out more knives.

As a result, although I'm a huge fan of minimal gear, I often carry way more knives than necessary. I usually have a Leatherman PST II, some kind of folder (used to be AFCK, now it's Axis), high-performance fixed blade (TTKK, or A.G. Russell Deerhunter), and big-job knife (12" Ontario machete, or hatchet). On top of that, whatever knives I want to take for a test drive on this trip.

On hikes, everything gets left back at camp except the high-performance fixed blade, and possibly the folder.
