How Many Limited Edition / Specials See Regular Use?

Hi Folks,
I have recently acquired my first limited edition or "Special" Buck. It's one of the 119s with Ironwood Burl handles and Malachite bands that was offered by Buck recently. It came with a Certificate of Authenticity as being one of 28 made. It's very nice!
This is my third Buck knife, the other two being a 110 that I have had for awhile that I carry regularly, and a 108 that I use for prepping produce farmers markets. Both my 110 and 108 are basic standard production models and see regular use.

I am curious how many people use their Special limited production knives for regular carry and use. I really like this 119 Special, and would happily carry it and use it for general outdoor tasks, but is this a foolish thing to do? I don't follow the collectors' market, and I have no idea how much a knife like this would appreciate in value as a collectable. It was $200 new from Buck, which is in the range of what a non-Special custom shop build could cost.
Apart from any collector value the knife may have, is it considered bad form or in bad taste to subject a beautiful limited edition piece like this to regular use where it could get a bit beat up?
This knife looks very cool; it does seem like a shame to leave it in a safe.

I look forward to hearing how you all treat your Specials, and your thoughts on things like this.
Thanks

I only have a couple and they're actually the one's I carry most. I decided if I'm gonna spend money on something, I'm gonna use it. That being said, none of my special knives are all that rare or anything like that, but nice limited editions none the less. I think they become more special when I do more than just look at them :thumbsup::thumbsup:

IMO, you have an instant collectible with only 28 being made. For me, it would be a display piece and I'd buy an off-the-shelf one to use. I have several custom(not Buck) fixed blade knives that I ordered with the intent of using...just can't bring myself to do it. Preston

I only have one true limited edition and it gets used all the time. It’s actually my favorite 110.

Do what ever brings you the greatest satisfaction. I enjoy my Buck's in different ways. I enjoy the ownership of them all however, some I enjoy using, some admiring, many it's the hunt to acquire then one or both of the others.

IMHO there is nothing wrong with an eye towards collectibility and potential return on investment. You can always use a knife but you can never "unuse" it.

I use mine as well. When I buy a knife, whether a limited edition or not. I buy it to use. With the exception of the 'Club Knife'. That one has gold inlay and I won't use it. DM

Look at it this way if you use yours then there will be only 27 in mint condition. So the value of mine just went up!! Better than money in the bank!! Thank You...
But you need to consider one thing. The 119 you and I have aren't Limited Editions, sort of speak, they are 2 of 28 that will ever be made, EVER!! Think About it...

Don, you have good taste! These are great looking knives. Beautifully built. I wasn't looking at it this way, but you make a very good point.

I might be a little crazy, but I carry my Onset 4 or 5 days a week, my Yellowjacket is in the door pocket in my truck, and my BG42/elk Vanguard is in my hunting pack.

Why not, right?

I’ve been carrying my Buck Mayo TNT everyday for the past ten years. Still razor sharp and reliable.

I would be just the opposite. If I bought a knife just to collect, I wouldn't be able to resist using it. Maybe not much, but I'd use it on something. So I have concluded that if it is to special for me to use, it is to special for me to own. :)

O.B.

I went thru the same issue in 2008 with the club 111. Gold etched mirror polished, nickel silver, elk handles. .But when I was debating with myself on using a LE, NS, chip flint buffalo horn 112 my wife told me 'who are you saving it for? ' and that was a true Buck moment. I took the 111 out of the box, cut off the flap on the sheith so it was open top and gave it limited use since then. I call it my DUC (dress up carry) The gold has held up well and for years it was my most used Buck. Enjoy it! Show it off to your friends but don't abuse it. One day when your gone it will be a cherished heirloom. Because it was used and cherished by you...

My 110s from the Buck custom shop I use. Club knives I don't use unless I bought 2 (when I have the foresight of temptation and the cash). The offerings with "super steels" just beg to be used. Example: SKblades Titan. I only bought one at first, but David Martin's thread on his Titan testing forced me to buy a 2nd. It's on my hip now.
Collectable types with blade etchings etc, I do not use.

Tony, good for you. My 'Ole Blue' is a great one to carry and use. I have always liked the look of your Custom 110 w/ BG-42 steel. Handsome. DM

The Titan is already a favorite of mine as well. I think they nailed it with this one, especially for a good solid user. It is on my belt this morning as well.
