How many long distance shooters here?

This is my other hobby. I just got a NORCAL Precision 300 win mag long gun.
It has been fully built by Jerry Rice at NORCAL and it sits in a McMillan a5 stock. The work done to it is too much to list here, but it shoots under 1/2 MOA with Black Hills 190grs. I will be shooting this mainly for practice at 600 to 1000yds as I have a .308 I can use for the "close-in" stuff :D Next I need to get better optics. Who else here shoots?

Hey McFly! Gun talk goes in Gadgets & Gear. Shame on you. ;)

How is your Sightron holding up? I have a line on a Super Sniper or a sightron, but I am wondering if I should save the coin for a nightforce or a high end "Luepy". Ah well, I have some time before this rig needs to be up and running, so we'll see.

I used to shoot high power and smalll bore in the USAF. Smallbore was a 40X heavy barrel, Redfield 3200 20X and Redfield Mk VIII irons, along with all the other goodies. High power was an M1 Garand 30-06 iron sights up to 1000 yds. That sure was fun. Sure would have liked to make it to Camp Perry, but transferred to Guam, and SAC wouldn't send me to the AF shoot as an ATC team member... I took up skeet shooting there. Met some nice people shooting.
For long distance hunting, a Weatherby .300 Weatherby Magnum, Leupold VXI-4X12... I wish I still had it...

I have a M700VS in .308, McMillian LOD stock, 10x US Optics. My original plan was to load one of VV's high energy powders behind a Hornady AMAX or Berger VLD bullet. Out of the 26" barrel I was hoping to get near .30-06 velocity and thus make it a better long range rifle. It's one of those projects that got shelved for one reason or another, but I will get back to it.

I've also thought about rebarreling it in .260 Remington or 6.5mm-.284. Both of these rounds are being used with good effect at 1000 yards.

For your scope, I'd save up for the Nightforce or a Leupold M1 or M3.

It holds up great.

Sightron scopes are one of those "undiscovered" good deals. It's got way more clarity, and repeatability than any leupy that I've seen, for a lot less $$.
It's great optically too. Warranty is about the best.

Midway carries them at good prices.

in my area (austin tx) arent any ranges longer than 300 yards, shoot that all the time w/a AR15, AK47,AK74, my deer rifles and my remington 700 7 mag w/a simmons 6-18 variable scope, want to shoot at a buds place in south texas where ya could go 700 or so pretty easy, havent had a chance since i got the 7MM, really enjoy the 300 yard range though it is good practice, if ya can hit an 18" plate at 300 yards hitting at 100 or so is easy.

one of my buds has a barret .50 auto w/a big scope, he lives east of los angeles and they shoot somewhere out in the desert at a 12" or 15" plate at a mile........

Although the .260 isn't bad, the 6.5-284 is a real barrel burner. Looking at maybe 1500 rds or so, maybe less as far as barrel life goes. Using 43grs. of IMR4895 with a SMK 168gr. should get you about 2700fps from a 26 inch tube. This is my favorite load for a .308

hey Marty... unfortunatly, there aren't too many ranges on this side of the pond and on this side of the mountains to do much long range shootin'... but I'd love to learn.
Right now I've got a CETME in .308, but I haven't had a chance to go past 100 yards...
Any places over there that let non-members fire on lanes beyond 100 yards?

Marty,

A Federal Ammuniton rep mentioned just that load years ago at a seminar I attended.

VV's 550 series powders are suppoesed to buy you an extra 100fps or so, and my plan was to use the 155gr AMAX to add a little more speed.

Yes!! Tacoma Sportsman goes to 200 (good lazy day practice :D ) Paul Bunyan(spelling?) goes to 600(but you have to be a member regardless of distance) and there is a range in Eatonville that goes to a 1000. If you are in Seattle, Bunyan and Tacoma Sportsman are pretty close to you.

Marty,

Is Bunyan by Pyallup(spelling)? In the early 90s I did some match shooting there somewhere at the 3, 5 and 600 yrd marks with an old m1 Garande. Currantly we just got some very cool long range rifles with a carbon fiber barrel wrap. I've handled them but not had a chance to fire one yet. Had some guys hold 2 inch groups from 1500 yrds.

Yes it is pretty close to puyallup(in puyallup I think) Are you sure it's 2 INCHES at 1500 and not 2 MOA? :D Anyhow, David Tubbs just nailed a 1600+ yard shot on an 18 inch(I think, maybe 24) plate....OFFHAND!!
I'm lucky to hit a 12 inch plate every time at 1000 in the prone! man, that is some shootin'
