How many models and variations?

Anybody know how many models and variations of Spyderco knives have been made? I know it’s a big number, 600? More?

It depends on what you call a "variation". I have over two dozen C07 Police Models not counting duplicates and I know there are at least that many more, but there aren't that many official variations. I'm considering different steel stamps, handle materials, blade grinds, edge types, presence or absence of lanyard hole, etc. By that yardstick I doubt even Sal could give you an accurate number.

Does that include dealer "exclusives" too? They might not even be listed on SpyderSource or SpyderWiki. Too many to count, IMO, and why even bother?

Do you really need to collect EVERY the variation of a specific model. A pointless effort IMO but, then again, I generally only buy one version of any knife that I own or want to buy. Just buy the variation you like/need most and be done w/it.

Whoa, I saw RamZar posted 92 new models just in 2018! Y’all have convinced me there are way more than 600! Disregard my question....Thanks for the responses

We buy knives cause we enjoy collecting/owning them. Taking your argument to it's logical conclusion, why buy more than 1 or 2 folders period? Does anyone here have any actual NEED to own say, an Endura, Manix , Native , Stretch, AND PM2? Do you really have separate tasks for each 1 of the 5 that the other 4 couldn't handle just fine? I assume not. And, there you go, same reason to buy multiple versions of a single knife. You buy a knife cause you like the design of it. And if you like a design, such as the Endura, and want to get one in black, one in blue, one in green, one full serrated, 1 waved, and one limited edition in neon polka dots with S90V or w/e, I say don't just buy one and be done with it, I say as long as you can afford em, get the entire lot if that's what makes you happy. And if you really like it enough to try and get every variation out there, well...best of luck to you.

I agree that everyone has the right to buy whatever they like, even if it's 10-20 variations of the same knife. It's your money and your choice. I was just expressing my view of how I collects things and was NOT trying to impose that view on anyone else.

However (and you actually help to make my point), there are SO MANY different brands and types of knives, why buy more than one variation of each, when there are so many other types of knives that you can buy, unless there is some practical reason to do so. That's my personal philosophy in buying anything (not just knives) which is why I have over 200 different knives w/only a few dups. The dups I have were bought to use one and keep the other for the collection.

So, just as I can accept how others choose to collect things, so too should others be able to accept how I (and others do) as well. If how we each choose to create a collection makes no sense to others, so be it.

Easy. Cause one may not like many of those other knives. For me, ones I like, I buy, but if I like the Manix for example, more than those many other brands and types of knives, why would I buy one of them over a 2nd or 3rd or whatever Manix? Me, I buy lots of knives from different brands, but others may like less than me. And some brands I won't buy even if I like the designs, because I don't consider them worth the price. Like would I be interested in a Microtech? Sure. Am I interested enough to pay $350+ for one? No chance. And in other cases, I just like designs less. You could GIVE me a Sebenza, and I would gladly trade it for say, a couple PM2s, cause I like the PM2, and hate the Sebenza.
