The local World's Gym finally snagged me. I've been putting it off for years but when they advertised a cheap rate for local college prof's I could no longer resist. :D

I've been going in pretty regularly now for about 6 weeks and I'm already seeing results....pretty crazy!

Had I known as a kid that going to the gym would actually "work"...I might have spent more time there....LOL

I've tried other stuff....fads, etc....but "old school" is what's doing it for me. Diet and Exercise. I even started it off with a visit to my Family Doc.

Anybody got any success stories? I could use some. :p

Dan -- Consistency rules. That said, I think I've hit a plateau and it's time to do something different . . I try to work cardio, abs and then resistance training -- legs heavy once a week, upper body twice a week with different exercises. Stay with it, been good for me.

Awesome news.

I train all the time - it keeps me sane and peaceful. I don't know if this is unique to me or if everyone is like this, but I'm generally a happier, better person when I'm training.

I don't go to the "gym" too often - I race triathlons/running races of all distances, and "play" jiu jitsu. I probably train 5 times a week.

What time of workouts have you been doing?

If I can get a solid workout in, my whole day goes better. I used to be 223 pounds (I'm 6' tall) and now I got down to about 191 pounds. I feel great. I don't do the gym very much, but I train a lot outside or in the house. I do some simple push-up and pull up routines, have some free weights for shoulders and arms, and then do plyometrics for cardio and legs, as well as sit-ups.

Last year, I made a commitment to ride my bike to work for the whole summer. I loved it so much, I decided to do it all fall and winter, too. I ended up riding about 65 miles a week through snow and whatever else on my big 29er mountain bike, and I ended up filling up my gas tank only once in 10 months.

Consistent, regular exercise can change your life. For real. When I miss a few days or even a week or two, I can feel it. As soon as I get back into it, my whole mind-set changes...

Good luck and keep it up!

Hi Dan -

I lift 6 days a week, with a three routine workout twice a week with one day off.

I spend 40-50 minutes doing my workout each day.

It will make you feel good and it is good for you.

Good luck and string those months and years together, and make sure you follow a healthy diet.

best regards -

Thanks, guys.

Great to hear.

Right now I'm doing Chest/Triceps/Biceps/Abs on Tuesday mornings, Back/Shoulder/Biceps on Thursdays, Legs/Abs on Fridays. Each day has stretching in between lifts. Biceps are split between 2 days. I am doing "core-focused" versions of exercises rather than just hitting the weights. Each workout goes for 45-50 minutes and is followed by 20 minutes of cardio (recumbant bike and/or stepmill) and 10 minutes in the sauna. Whole thing takes about 1.5 hrs "roundtrip" for me. A pretty good time commitment...but so far, the results seem to be worth it.

Diet is a tough area for me because I do great for the daytime meals....it's dinnertime that kills me.

Dan

Dan,

Are you doing a short (5-10min) "cardio" style warm up prior to lifting? If not, I would suggest it. Getting in better shape does great things for you.

Yes...oops...I forgot to mention that.

I do 5 minutes on a bike to warm up before lifting - even on leg days (like today....ouch!)

Dan

Sounds like you are off to a great start Dan, core exercises are really the way to go in MO !

Always strive to make your workouts harder and shorter rather than adding exercises and creating marathon workouts.

Another important tip is to always shake things up, muscles adapt very quickly so you have to change things up on a regular basis be it the amount of reps, speed of reps, types of movements etc !

I work out at the Y 3 to 4 times a week. but each day at home i do some simple stuff for 30 minutes, push ups, crunches sit ups, pull ups etc... nothing fancy. My main aerobic is i bike 20 miles 3 times a week. its still hard on me a bit, but i want to get up to 30 miles if i can.

Just keep at it. I feel like i might actually get to see my grandkids now, lol and my kids are only 4 and 6. 2 years ago i felt like a old fart...

Definitely focus heavily on cardio and eating right. Whatever keeps the blood pressure in check. Looking good for the ladies is one thing; not suffering a stroke, kidney failure, heart attack, etc., is the real reward.

Yes. So far, I haven't taken any pounds off. In fact, I gained a few the first few weeks... But I've leveled off and this morning weighed in a little less for the first time. Hopefully I'm replacing fat with muscle, but only a hydro fat test would tell me....too much $$$ just to be reminded I'm still overweight...LOL

I don't go to commercial gyms much anymore because they can be distracting &/or restrictive so I prefer the convenience of home gyms. Been lifting for 27yrs, managed a gym and was a personal trainer. The last year has been slack after tearing my rotator cuff trying to get my bench over 400lbs so I had to switch to lifting inmates during my recovery.:jerkit: If dinner is your problem eat backwards...BIG breakfast, med lunch & sm/med dinner. You'll make better use of your calories and hopefully have better balanced blood sugar throughout the day which will reduce binging and prevent you from feeling starved dinner time. If your goal is to lose weight the 2 best times for cardio are after a workout and in a fasted state upon waking. You could do fasted cardio on 2 or 3 of your non gym days which would complement your goal nicely. If you don't like cardio do low intensity cardio...fat loss is comparable but the effort required is less daunting. Use a heart rate monitor or you'll spoil the magic of low intensity cardio and get nothing from it. Not sure if you are just doing core-focused exercises or that plus weights but either way you should question whoever has you training biceps more than the rest of your body. Biceps do not have better recoverability and given their secondary role in pulling movements should often be trained less not more. Training Back the day before Legs will affect your Leg training so I would also switch your Back & Chest days. Good luck with your training.

Tuesday - Back/Biceps/Abs
Thursday - Chest/Shoulder/Triceps
Friday - Legs/Abs

I work out at home.I can't be bothered with that fashion show known as the local gym.

I have a very basic setup.A bench,a hundred lbs. of dumbells,a few hundred lbs. for barbells,a heavy bag,a speedbag,& a jump rope.

Dan

hi twice per week to keep my body weight=70 kilos with 1,80 metre height ;-)
an during weekend one short walk in wilderness.

I am not a huge fan of "gyms" but I have weights at the house. I lift 4 times a week and run 3-5 miles on the off days for cardio... no clue if I'm doing it "right" but I'm down 20 lbs and feel fantastic.

I dont really hit the gym enough to be considered a gym rat but I ride my bike almost every day and a few months ago i rode and completed a 2 day, 150 mile road bike thing

Last time I hit the Gym was two years ago when my daughters HS graduation was held in the school gym due to inclement weather.:D

If I had to go to the gym I don't think I would be in any shape at all. I got sick a few years ago (Chemo sick) and my lovely wife wanted me to work out per doctors suggestion. She got me Precor and a Lifecycle and since we have added a Hoist V6, so all my workouts are at home and yes I use it at least 3 days a week.

Lifting will really help you feel better. I got a pinched nerve in my upper back a little over a month ago and havent been able to do any sort of physical activity till last week. I have never been so out of shape. before my injury Id lift 3-4 days a week. mostly power lifts. I am 6'1 and about 180 and was repping 165 on bench before my injury. I benched today for the first time since my injury and could barley get 100lbs for sets of 10. :( Hopefully I will get my strength back quickly. Im just shocked at how I lost so much so quickly. My running ability went from being able to run 4 miles easily at an 8 min pace to not being able to run 1 at a 9 min pace.
