How many of you have ever started over with your knives?

I guess it's an evolutionary process, but how many of you have ever reached a point when you look at your knives and just yawn? You decide that all the productions will have to go, and you'll either take the cash from the sale proceeds and buy one or two customs, or try to trade the productions for one custom? You might decide to start with the folders first, then fixed, or vice versa (thus, you may have to make do with only one folder for quite a while, because the new additions will be much more expensive).

I've now started carrying my new Stars and Stripes Sebenza daily, and the rest of the knife drawer inhabitants are getting a little jealous! Is this pretty natural, or am I just in a rut? geegee

I've actually just reached that point. I'm currently looking at my collection to "weed out" some of the ones that don't get used. They're all good knives, but some just get used a whole lot more than others. I'm looking at a lot of different things right now--customs, balisongs, and damn this new flashlight habit  (not a knife, but it sure is sucking money from my knife funds).

IMHO you're just taking a step on the knife owner's evolutionary journey. As you become more educated about knives your tastes and desires will naturally change. Just enjoy the process and see where it takes you.

I think a lot of us go through this. I was all for tac folders and now I'm selling most of them. Bought a wood inlay Sebenza, which to me has a more old-school 'tool' folder look.

I just sold my Chris Reeve Shadow 4 and used the proceeds to purchase a Dave Beck Wilderness Survival Knife. I also gave my father an old Cold Steel Mini Tanto. Just looked everything over and got rid of the 2 I never used. I'll keep my Becker Combat Utility 7 as my beater when I don't want to mess up my nicer customs. That's my goal though is to weed out the production models and replace them with some nice custom jobs.

Customs? Oh, yeah. Balisongs? Nah. Flashlights? Uh, oh...I flew from Dallas to Los Angeles last week, and read the entire Surefire catalogue, cover to cover (and let me tell you, I own more than just a couple).

But I digress. As far as knives go, I'll bet for a heck of a lot of forum members, the Sebenza is the knife that became the catalyst for more exciting and higher quality knives (just my opinion-not trying to start another pro or ant-Sebbie thread). geegee

I've already been through this a couple of times. Right now I am starting to collect Bowie knives and that means that a couple of knives that I never thought I would sell might just end up in the for sale forums.

I've rotated my knife "collection" so much over the years, that it's a wonder I have ANY "originals" left! I've also found that I have re-collected many of the knives that I've traded-off a time or two.:D.

Yeah, that's a problem, and one in fact I've experienced twice. One knife I actually traded away, bought it back, then did it all over again. I just recently spent 3-4 weeks watching a forum member put up for sale a knife I traded. Because I've felt myself "moving in a new direction," I really had to fight the urge to buy that one back too. I was successful in that effort (this time). geegee

as it is evolving. My tac folders see little pocket time. Slip joints do most of my daily cutting very well. I'm starting to look at small fixed blades in a whole new light. I find I'm going back to basics. Buck 110, 2 blade trappers, been looking real hard at some of the little knives at Ragnar's Ragweed Forge. But it wasn't a single moment so much as a progression.

I'm the total backwards of that, kind of like Silver a couple posts up. I've owned a couple handfulls of high end production knives, and a scant few low end customs. My third knife was a Sebenza, and after lots and lots of weeding the most expensive knife I currently have would probably sell on the forums for about $70, and I don't have anywhere near that much in it.

Sounds like lots of people just realize that there's something better out there, and gradually move up. For me, the glitter, magic, hype, whatever wore off, and I realized that I'd get a lot more enjoyment out of a SAK or a good Spyderco than any custom I can think of.

In March I had to sell my collection. I am down to three knives and just now starting over.
The hardest part is trying to find some of the knives I had to sell:(

And I did not make a cent of profit selling my knives, not one!!!!!
