I know it sounds stupid ,But If i ever need a knife in a emergency i would want it as razor sharp as I could make it! Like fighting for your life, Or cutting yourself from a seatbelt and so on. If I use the knife i carry then its not always going to be razor sharp, So I have just started to carry 2 knives, one for using and one for a emergency, Is this stupid or do you guys have any other thoughts about this ?

Carrying two knives counldn't ever be wrong in my opionion.:D I frequently have a couple of blades on me and more in the truck:rolleyes: If having a dedicated "emergency" blade makes you feel good then I wouldn't worry about what somebody else thinks. For defensive use, I usually carry a 9mm:D

If carrying two works for you, then carry two. Fishing, hunting, or a project that uses a knife hard are reasons for carrying more than one knife. For an EDC, good blade steel keeps its edge even with moderate use. A few passes on the crock sticks and/or strope when you get home will bring that perfect edge right back. I would never let a knife get dull enough that I had to worry about it's reliability.

Kennieyk,
i asked a different but somewhat related question in another thread but wanted to make sure you know that i dont think there is anything wrong with carrying two knives, one dedicated and one general purpose.
as alphamaniv said, if this puts you at ease then do it. i too carry a 9mm for defensive purposes but have my blade handy all the time, i get much more use out of that.

Most people these days carry a folder. I personally think a fixed blade and a folder is a good combination but it needs to be suited to your lifestyle requirements and legal constraints.

A lot fo folks carry a knife but never use it, just for those emergencies you talked about. However, some poeple do carry their "Sunday knives" or "gents knives" - you know the ones with MOP and some exotic materials - NEVER USED. Its a "dress" piece or a showoff model. But I can't think of anyone who doesn't end up needing a knife for something mundane through the day. So theres that el-cheapo made-in-Taiwan model in the other pocket.

In terms of folders, I fidn that most "tactical" folders do most jobs well.POcket clip, One-handed is a must, preferably ambidextrous as well. A seond folder sometimes comes in handy - a different edge sometimes evens out any deficiencies in any single system - one razor edged, the other serrated. However, I like the security of a fixed blade - at least 3-4inch blade lengths. If defense is ever considered, a 4inch blade is minimum, but like many others, if I anticipated combat manouevres, I'd rely on Mr Glock...

Accessibility is everything, and the idea of USING a knife regularly and commonly, needs to become a "normal" cultural activity - as should the idea of sharpening. It just becomes habit - use a knife often, quick slicks on a stone / rod - a knife that is used often and is also always sharp.

Cheers. Jason.

I ALWAYS carry two knives when I go out. I'll either have one of my small fixed blades and a Spydie Dragonfly or Delica. Here are some of my combos...

Mroz/Nealy Amoeba- Delica or D-Fly
Nimravus Cub- Delica or D-Fly
AFCK- D-Fly
BM 551- D-Fly

I pretty mush take my D-Fly everywhere I go...I also have two knives in my car. I always keep my Greco Baby Whisper and a SAK.

Well that was kinda what i was getting at . Why use a 300 dollar mod auto with a seat belt cutter and window breaker to cut boxs at work .I now carry a 80 dollar rekat and and a kershaw vapor, I use the vapor for boxes straps string tape and so on . I just cant bring myself to do that with a good knife. Why dull it up ? I mean the rekat is so sharp its scary in a way , and that the way i want it if i ever really need it .

It's not stupid at all...in fact, a lot of people share that philosophy...I'm one of them :)

Hey Guys...

I usually carry 2-3 different knives.. Lately a Spydie Perrin, an Emerson Commander and a small SAK.. The SAK probably gets more use then anything, the Perrin is along for the ride, ready to go...

The Commander gets used when the SAK can't do the job...
The SAK gets used at the post office and when a folder isn't the best thing to pull out around Sheeple..

So yes,, ,carrying multiple knives is very common I think..Might have a problem explaining it away to an LEO though..

right now,sitting in front of the computer,i have a G10 spydie police,carson m21 and bm940bt on me.

when i go out add a necker made by my buddy maxtheknife,mt halo3,and a dozier slim outdoorsman w/jigged bone handles.

yeah,i carry more than one knife.

use em all.

For many people, two(or more) blade carry is more convenient and useful. I like to carry one plainedged blade along with a fully serrated blade to complement(for tougher cutting). ;)

Along with my two Leathermans(SuperTool 200 and Micra), my work EDC consists of two main blades--a Spyderco FRN Endura SE and a Buck 110--with the Spydie seeing the majority of my daily cutting tasks. I suppose that the Spydie should be kept razor sharp since it can be accessed the fastest in an emergency, SD situation, etc., but it is the most used of the two because of the awesome cutting power of that fully serrated edge.

The Buck sees more use as my non-work EDC, along with my Spyderco Military PE(or CE) for SD that is kept razor sharp for "unexpected" situations.

Just two?!??!?!?! I'm sitting here at work and have 8 knives on me. Now even I will admit thats a slight overkill, but I like to have at least one of each of the following categories of knives on me, especially at work:

Slipjoint or smaller gents folder for envelopes and minor office chores

Medium folder for opening larger boxes, cutting rope etc.

"Emergency Reponse" a knife dedicated solely to responding to car accidents and medical calls

Large heavy duty folder for mundane heavy duty cutting chores

"Self Defense" knife

Necker back-up knife

Besides the multitools (SOG Powerlock and Leatherman Micra), I will always have two folding knives on me. Plus, when I can, I will add a fixed blade to that.

None of them really have any dedicated uses, but I do like to carry my AFCK with the thought that it even needed to, it could be used defensively.

I always have two. The Gunting has never been used since I started carrying it last November.

I forget that its there (I carry it in a Skunkworks sheath) so when I need to use a blade I always go for either my Sebenza or AFCK that's clipped to my right pocket.

I don't not use the Gunting 'cos I think it's going to get dull; it's just that my other EDC is usually more practical or easier to use.

Usually, I carry multiple knives - mainly because it's fun to do so. :)

If you're worried about carrying only one knife and having it dulled in an emergency situation, then just make sure you keep it sharp! If sharpening it once a night after you get off work or whatever isn't enough to keep it from getting significantly dull during the day, there are plenty of portable sharpening systems and pocket stones you could use.

Some people carry a bit of sandpaper or emory paper in their wallets. A few swipes on the paper in your free time, and the edge is back to new.

Me too. My defensive knife is clipped to my right hand front jeans pocket and it's my reflex to reach for that pocket. That knife is WELL taken care of and is usually hair-poppin' sharp.

I actually carry 6 knives: Defensive permanent, EDC rotation knife, Swiss Army, Doctor's knife (PC), CRKT Kiss (money clip), concealed auto.

Sometimes a 7th as a neck knife, though something around my neck is uncomfortable for me so only in cases when I know I'll actually use it.

You're not strange. My primary defensive knife doesn't get used except for sometimes when I'm in a hurry to cut something because it's so deeply in my muscle memory that I draw it and use it often before I remember that my 'working' knife is in my OTHER pocket. That's OK. Small sacrafise for the habbit of a quick defensive knife.

Dude, you gotta at LEAST carry a Swiss Army Knife in addition to your defensive knife.

(I recommend the Victorinox CyberTool.)

After reading all the 'well thought out' posts here in your thread, I'll try to (remember) and answer your original question about knife usage and carry...

Yes, most of here are knuts, and have more than one around at all times...I thought I was pretty conservative at first when I read your initial post, then it hit me...if I count the SAK, the wallet knife, the truck knife, the desk drawer knife, and the 'Wave' multi-tool knife...along with my carry two folders, I have lots of knives around me...but that wasn't your question, now was it? ;)

So, in answer to your question...yes, you could get by with only one ( ) if you sharpened it regularly...

I usually carry a Leek, Cuda EDC, or Vapor...all in 50/50, all sharp. Today, an average day, I cut through the insulation on some pretty heavy insulated cable with my EDC to get the wires out...I needed them.

The down pressure I applied was so hard that I cut the metal braid under the rubber too. A coworker was shocked that I would 'do that' to my knife...Christ, I might dull it even...lol

WTF? I keep big stones laying around here at 'Casa de Mel', and while making my evening meal, I sharpened it again...for about the 100th time. A few strokes here, a few strokes there, and I'm ready to cut cable again tomorrow...

(Doesn't everyone do this? Take a poop, sharpen a knife...talk on the phone, sharpen a knife...have a smoke, sharpen a knife...right?)

Keep it sharp...if you carry two, keep them both sharp...ad nauseum

Mel

Not everyone, Mel.

I don't smoke that much these days, so I won't be caught smoking and sharpening. Though I wonder if I could get with setting up croc sticks in the shower or in front of the toilet. Maybe both. Coarse hones for the toilet setup (reprofiling and grunt work :p ) and fine hones for the shower (something to do between rinsing and repeating).

Kennieyk,

Double carry is very practical, but don't look for non-knifeknuts or non-kungfu folks to understand your rationale. In fact, it's better not to explain your rationale unless your only other option was to laugh maniacally. Also, take Fulloflead's advice and get some sort of SAK. The ones with mini-scissors have been invaluable to me.

I carry 2 knives and a leatherman mini-tool almost
every day. The 2 usually are diff. sized folders,
but fixed blades are also in the rotation. I always
use my knives. If I don't use it, I will stop carring
it. I like multi-purpose. I have serrated knives
but do not carry them on a day to day basis. I keep
all my knives sharp! Sharpening is like whittling
for me. If It aint shavin sharp, why am I carring it?
Just the view from here.
