I recently got a Microtech UTX 85 S/E in trade and I was wondering are they basically an expensive fidget device or do people actually use them for every day cutting chores? Please post up some of the uses that you use yours for. All I have cut since I received mine is some fruit and I opened some bags of chips. Thanks

I never abuse my knives. I use my knife for cutting. I have other tools if I need them. I was just wondering about dust and debris getting in the knife and messing it up. And was curious as to how others use there OTF. I don't want mess it up. I have never owned an OTF knife before. So I wonder about it. Thanks for the reply.

I EDC my UTX-85 most days and use it for whatever cutting task for which a knife might be suitable. My main complaint about the knife is that the grind is quite thick. While the microbevel is tiny and BET is minimal, the blade height is so short and the stock sufficiently stout that it is a terrible slicer so a rotten choice for a lot of food-prep tasks or cutting up cardboard. But for a bit of whittling, opening packages, cutting tubing, and other tasks, it is just fine and the double-action is a JOY. However, as mentioned above, keep it running smooth - if it starts to become difficult to slide that button all the way to action, it's time for a cleaning, otherwise you will begin to hate the jimped-button and handles.

Microtech's can take a beating. Make it earn what you paid for it. :D

Thanks folks for the replies! I'm excited about it and love the double action. Sounds like it will take whatever I throw at it. Although I don't ask my knife to do non knife things. Thanks again!!

Never owned one, until yesterday. My crazy, beloved, brother-in-law gave me a Microtech Dirac for my birthday. I wouldn't expect it to handle what a ZT 562 would handle, but it should be fine for pretty routine cutting stuff. It's a cool little knife.

I carry and use my little utx70. Great bar knife, it slices fine. I just do what Microtech suggests, wipe off the blade before closure and occasionally blow it out with compressed gas. Had it for a year, no problems, no oil, no clean.

I carry a combat troodon quite a bit, use if for normal cutting stuff. Boxes, opening hay bales, cutting twine and rope.

UTX70 is my goto house knife. it is so small yet functional that I normally through it into my pocket of whatever I'm wearing around the house. sweats, shorts or anything that is relaxing. I use mine all the time.

Got a Ultratech about a year ago and it is in normal carry rotation. Slim, light, small in pocket and the tanto edge adds a nice touch to the mass of single edge knives I normally carry. Only thing is like to change is the main bevel seems a little thick to me but a 16 per side secondary made it cut like mad. Probably makes it in pocket a week out of the month, unless testing a new blade or the sebenza 21 CF has kicked it out and back in the case :)

I've been carrying a UTX85 for several months now. Like it so much, I got an Ultratech to carry when I feel like I want a little more knife. Liked that so much I picked up a Scarab for those days I feel like I really need a little more knife. I have Troodons that I love too and even have a UTX70 due in my mailbox any day now (thanks DLT Trading). Only thing missing that I'm remotely interested in is a Combat Troodon.

I went from carrying and using a variety of different folders (primarily Bucks) to carrying a SE Microtech dual action OTF almost exclusively.

I thought they were just an expensive novelty until I got one to use. I'm hooked now and aside of hunting duties, they're my primary cutting tool.

The one thing I think I appreciate the most is how fast I can go from pocket to cutting to pocket compared to any folder I would carry. I believe it's much safer in that regard. No lock back to manipulate either two handed or hand plus leg, and no frame or liner lock where I have to put flesh in the path of the blade to manipulate the lock.

Yeah, I have more than a lifetime's supply of them and just can't stop getting more.

Now auto’s are legal in Michigan, but I am not inclined to carry it. It’s a little clunky (boxy), a little short, a little heavy, a little sensitive to dirt, and a so so slicer.

I carry my UTX-85 maybe once a week. Normal cutting of ropes, tape, zip ties, even trimmed some vines with it. The part I hate about it is the lanyard hole extension off the pocket clip. Drags across my hand every time I reach in my pocket

Grind it off

I’ve thought about making a new clip entirely to preserve the original
I did just that! It's made from a brass angle-brace that I later super-blued but the color wears away almost immediately so now it is just a dull brass (due to deliberate scuffing with a scotch-brite pad) and I quickly decided (like you) that I didn't like the lanyard hole and ground it away, also cut a groove to connect the 2 holes... I will snap a new photo tonight and post it up, but here is what it looked like originally (I wanted a shorter clip that was more comfortable in hand, you cannot even feel this during use):
