How many sales make a production knife a commercial success?

Hello all. This is a question I've often wondered about, but really have no idea about the answer. I suppose any knife that covers its design, marketing and production costs and turns any kind of profit is a commercial success. And I imagine that millions of Kabar USMCs and Buck 110s have been sold, but what about more specialized or expensive knives?

Does anyone have any idea about sales numbers for specific knife models, or the typical size of a production run? At some point, if a knife model sells out production run after production run, does it then go into continuous production?

Or is this the sort of info that is jealously guarded by the industry?
