How many things can you improvise from a dead coyote?

By now you all know that I see survival as ones ability to:

1. Stop and recognize the situation for what it is.
2. Recoginize and Prioritize your "five survival essentials"
-a. Personal Protection: clothing, shelter, fire
-b. Signaling: manmade and improvised
-c. Sustenance: water and food
-d. Travel: with and without a map and compass
-e. Health: psychological, environmental, traumatic
3. Improvise to meet these prioritized needs using you time, energy, and materials wisely.

(this information is covered in my book).

With this in mind. Lets say we had built a mangle snare that just killed a coyote. I realize there is meat to be eaten but...what else could we do with it (using the whole animal) to utilize its meat fully and to meet our other needs? Use your imagination and refer back to the five essentials.

PS: You may want to post your answer before reading the others. :>)

Hi Greg...

Well lets see.. Food aside...

Bones

arrowheads, gigs, tools, firebow bearing, teeth for different tools, marrow for food

Fat

Rendered for cooking, candles, other food prep, grease for bearing, waterproofing

Hide

clothing, blanket, water/cooking container, rawhide strips, cordage, tinder (fur)

Guts

cordage, bait, food, containers (bladder can be inflated and left to dry),Blood liquid to drink

All I can think of at the moment...

Well you could make moccasins a coat or the like from the hide, use the fat to make signal fires, eat the meat and use the inards as bait for traps and or fishing, use the bones instead of stick in the shadow stick method of making a compass, and for the last section i am unsure of what you could do. But the sinews could be used to cordage. Anyways just some ideas. Geoff.

The two above mentioned a lot of what I was thinking.

The only things I have to add are:
bones for fishhooks, awls, arrow/throwing spear points.
fur for fishing flys, insulation in existing clothes, hide for mittens/gloves/hat.

Just a few thoughts.

Coyote Improv...

Skull -- drinking container. Can even heat stuff in it if done carefully.

needles and whistles/flutes can be made from other bones.

Skin can be made into a hat to impress your rescuers when they arrive. Brains can be used in the tanning of the hide.

Drinking blood -- I'd advise against it, unless it was some part of your manlihood that insisted. Good way to pick up any diseases it has, and it won't really provide a good source of water for you.

You could stick all the leftovers into a solar still for drinking water. Though it'd stink up pretty quick, I'd prefer plant matter...

Hi All,

Many great ideas above, few considerations on my side.

1) Depending on the climate/weather and location I might use it slightly differently. If in cold I would save it for food (I can burn wood but cannot digest it) and fur for blanket/clothing. If in arid area skin might be improvised into some sort of water container. How realistic it is, someone else more competent should tell.

2) Further question: would it be reasonable to think that making cord from gut and tendons and skin and trapping with some of the remains could provide even more meet/fur/skin? That might be provide further resources.
