I'm looking to buy a hydraulic press, and I was wondering for purposes of knifemaking, how many tons it should be rated for.

I eventually would like to:
1) Press together micarta.
2) Press layers of steel together for san mai blades.
3) Press in retaining pins/rivets.

Thanks in advance. :D

For making pattern welded steel I use a 25 ton hydraulic and I wouldn't want one any less.

Dude: You are talking about presses. 1 for damascus and the other for pins. Look at my shop tour on my site to see what I mean.
;)

You are talking about three different things here. The press for damascus and steel should be 25 to 28 tons.A good log splitter can be converted. The press for micarta would be a laminating press - 2 to 5 tons would be fine.It can be a manual pump up HF model (shop press). The best press for pins is a manual arbor press and is hand operated ,and can be home made (it can be hydraulic, but doesn't need much pressure).

This is my pin setting press it is a 9 ton Enerpac with the air powered hydraulic foot pump.
You could use this for laminations too.

Does it have a return address????? :D

Send it south down the coast. No reason we shouldn't have our more southern brethren share in the fun!

You stay stricktly coastal, and nobody gets hurt. Anything West of Florida, and I'll be up there in a Flash (at least as soon as it reaches 80)

Thanks for the info, Indian George and Bladsmth. Now that I think about it, it is pretty silly to expect a one-size-fits-all. :o

IG, Bertha is quite a beast!
