Without matches or lighters of course

know, not necesarily used yourself

lets count:

  1. firesteel/flint and tinder
  2. the "bowmethod"
  3. rubbing a stick on a board and tinder (no bow)(fireplow or handrill)
  4. carbon steel and quartz (and tinder <-gonna leave that out fer now)
  5. magnifying glass
  6. ice (shaped into magnifying glass)
  7. car battery or other major electrical spark
  8. 9v battery and steel wool
  9. parabolic reflective and sunlight (bottom of beer can greased up and used as paramirror might even work)
  10. a chemical reaction i DON'T know, yet

about 9 or 10 methods

not bad :)

Zippo/butane lighter (empty)
Fire piston
Catalytic converter
Car cigarette lighter
Spontaneous human combustion
Hollywood style car crash (ha ha)

fire piston oh yeah righ, i forgot that one :D

whats a catalytic convertor?

car cig lighter i dunno sounds a bit too much like a lighter to me lol

Know of, or actually done??

I've done matches, lighter, ferrocerium, and flint and steel.

Mostly just matches or magnesium bar for me. I am proficient with ferro and steel, but I have learned to love the mag bar. I have also used a magnifying glass. The 9V battery and steel wool was my favorite when I was a kid.

Hey Guys..

Fiddle...

Exactly...

Theres a HUGE difference between Knowing of, and Doing consistantly...

For instance....

I Know how to use and make a firebow, however I haven't actually done it yet...

I know about the Fire Plow, but don't know how to assemble or use it..

I know about a hand drill,, but haven't done it yet...

However..

I know how to use a firepiston and can use one consistantly..

I would also like to know about this "Catalytic Converter" ?

The chemical reaction you are looking for is Potassium Permanganate and Gycol or sugar..

Using Gycol, you simply add antifreeze to your PPM and it will self combust...

Using sugar,, the two ingredients must be mixed together with friction, and you will get ignition...

Very easy to do if you have your ducks in a row...

Get Consistant with each method is the Goal..

Oh yea, magnifying glass. I've done that one too.

A Catalytic converter is part of a starter for a car. don't know how you would use it to start a fire though.

Touching two wires off of the boat battery got the shore lunch fire going more than once over the years. Just a bit of spark on a gas soaked piece of paper will do in a pinch, or just plain tinder with birch bark.

I have made fire with:
matches, lighter
ferro rod, mag bar
hand drill
bow drill

I still want to learn the fire piston, fire saw, and fire plow.

You guys left out:
  • Driving a '74 Pinto ;)
  • Seeing Rosie O'Donnell in the shower!

Made fire with:
mag. glass
forro rod
mag. bar

Working on:
bow drill

Want to try:
flint/steel
hand drill
fire plow

Very proficient with a (1) bow & drill, I can even make cordage from most any source of fiber.
proficient with a (2) quarts/flint & steel, and (3) bamboo fire saw.
Have made fire with a (4) hand drill, many blisters. (5) magnifying glass.
and of course (6) matches, (7) lighter,
Have not tried a (8) fire plow, (9) Cordage type fire saw. (10) electrical spark,(11) chemical reaction, other than matches. (12) Fire piston. (13) ferro rod w/ or wo/ mag bar.(14) shooting in to tinder.
don't want to (15) spontaneously combust. (16) ketch lightning. (17) drive a pinto

Using a fire starter log
charcoal and matches and lighter fluid

Thanks for the thread, my skills are severely lacking in this arena. I used to know how to get a wood stove fire going.

k, looked it up

basicallly, tinder in bamboo stick and rubbing to ignition, right?

sounds like those bow things, easy in theory, almost impossible in reality :D
