How much better is a TNT than a TMX?

I love mayo's folders, but I have not purchased one yet due to the high price. I feel like I will soon sucumb to the temptation. I was wondering what the difference in quality and tolerance is between the TNT and TMX. Is the TNT smoother? If there is a big difference then I'll go with the TNT because it will be a lifetime investment. Anything that you've got that will serve as a comparison/contrast between the two would be helpful.

Also, I have the impression that the TNT is a fairly slim/light folder. Is this true? I have never handled one. If so, is it also true about the TMX?

Thanks,
runger

As a long time fan of the TnT and Tom's work, I wish I could answer all your questions, but I can only attempt what I have experience with, which is the TnT, I have not handled a TMX.

The TnT is of course the original, so it has that going for it, it is also one of the finest, smoothest, most precise folders I have ever come across. While some of Tom's models are indeed slim and light, he also makes some that are thicker and more oriented towards heavy duty use, so, you can't really generalize, the thickness and weight do vary among his various models and sizes. I would say though that his knives are almost always light for their sizes and thickness due to the all Ti handle and lightening holes, including the opening hole, which I tend to prefer to a stud or disk, though he makes both.

This shouldn't be a problem though since you can just choose a model that suits you, he makes plenty that are very slim and light, in fact, he makes a version with scales that are flat, as opposed to the thicker, rounded type. He makes some with thin blades and some with thick ones, so, again, you will be able to find a TnT that is just what you are looking for, you'll just need to keep your eyes open and ask questions of the seller.

As for prices, they have come down a lot in the last year or 2, while once almost any TnT would fetch near $1,000 and up in the secondary market, I have seen in forums, new TnTs selling for as little as $550, which in my opinion, is a steal for one of the world's finest folders. The prices do vary of course with the particular knife, ie. model, size, damascus/Talonite/S30V, Timascus handles, etc. But again, you should be able to pick up a new or like new user TnT with an S30V or Stellite blade for $600 give or take depending on market and the exact makeup of the knife. That's not much over what Tom charges, as I said, TnT's have become much more reasonable and approachable in the last year or 2, I don't think there has been a better time to buy one frankly than now, if you do your homework.

I have heard good things about the TMX, wish I had one, but, I don't know, I guess in my mind, I like the originals, the hand made TnT's, and maybe I'm just too stubborn to try something different, I bet you'd be happy with either, but, if it were me, as a lifetime investment, I'd go with the TnT, but I'd like to see what others feel.

You really can't go wrong with either knife. Both are slim and light, but built tough. Both have exemplary build quality. Both are very, very smooth. There really isn't a noticeable difference between the two in terms of quality at all, from the pieces that I've handled before.

I think the difference in price comes about from the fact that the TMX is a midtech knife (the parts are cut by CNC, then Tom hand grinds the blade, hand finishes the handle, and puts the knife together), while the TNT is a full custom (Tom does everything completely by hand on these).

The only significant differences are with the styling and shape of the knives. Personally, I like the look of the TNTs better, but I will admit that the TMX fits my hand a little bit better than most TNTs that I've handled other than a Dr. Death.

But again, you'll be happy with either knife you get. Regardless of whether it is a TNT or TMX, Tom really does make some of the best folders around.

The main advantage of the TNT over the TMX, IMO, is what Ari alluded to. The TNT comes in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, materials, and can be customized to your preference. You can pick from blade sizes of 2.5" up to about 4.5" and everything in between. All of these models pop up pretty regularly on the secondary market so you don't have to lament the fact that Tom's list is long and tough to get onto. Each TNT has a relatively unique appearance based on handle shape and hole pattern. From a fit, finish, and function perspective there isn't much differnce between the TNT and TMX. Both are among the smoothes functioning knives on the planet and his blade grinds are impeccable. I personally like the TNT better mostly due to cosmetics...
Choosing between a TNT and TMX is a great problem to have... enjoy!!
Edited to add,
PS - $650 is a lot of money to most of us but a knife of this quality is well worth it. I've seen knives of considerably less quality sell for quite a bit more...

With everything considered, if I had the chance to get one or the other I would take a TNT every time. I prefer the look, and the fact that it is a full custom that can be ordered the way I want it. Being made by Tom, I am sure the TMX is an excellent knife, but there is not enough of a difference in price between it and the TNT for me to choose the mid-tech. Besides, you don't get the holes, and what is a Mayo knife without the holes (I know - A damn good knife)? What you may get is better availability. The TNT is not an easy knife to get your hands on.

this is what I like.

sorry Tom, what I was meaning was that in terms of quality both are about equal with one another. Both are just as smooth as each other. To me there is no one factor that makes the TNT way better than the TMX. Both are fine knives.

In my opinion, and its ONLY my opinion, so don't let me spoil the mood; but if you're only going to get ONE Tom Mayo folder, it should be a TNT with a Talonite/6K blade. This is what set Tom apart for me, and when I think of Tom- other than my Buck/Mayo 172- I think of a true TNT (Titanium and Talonite) folder. The TMX is nice, but if there can only be one... By the by, you can REALLY see Tom's experience with his custom TNTs. They are smoother than a baby's butt, and can't be missed! Got to handle one of his and I want one, though with a specific kind of hole pattern. I'll get it if it comes up, but only if its a TNT.

Like I said, that's just my opinion.

Glorious Pascha!

What about a TNS> Titanium and Stellite

What about a TNC> Titanium and CPM154

What about a TNS30V> Titanium and S30V

What about a TND> Titanium and Damascus

He makes the TNT in all of those versions--all excellent!

You wouldn't consider all of those "true" TNT's?

You're right, he DOES make all those variations. You're also right, they're ALL great. You're FURTHER right, that when I think of the TNT, the only one that really rings true to me is one with a Talonite/Stelite (that'd be 6K) blade. All the others I'd call- and like I said this is ONLY my opinion, so take it for what its worth- "in the style of" the TNT. He asked which was better, and I gave the answer in my opinion. If the guy is going to have only ONE, why not get what Tom's especially known for?!?
