How much difference between 2x42 and 2x72?

Let me start by saying that my 2x42 is about 8 years old. I've made enough knives on it to know I need a 2x72 if I'm gonna get serious about making knives. My question is, is the difference night and day? Shaping a blade isn't the issue, the struggle is the plunge line and bevel. It's so difficult to do it cleanly. What significant differences can I expect once biting the bullet and buying a 2x72?

You're going to wonder why you waited 8 years to get a 2X72! Make sure you get one with a variable speed controller and pyroceramic glass platen. Plunge lines and bevels are going to be more uniform. Even blade shaping is going to be easier and faster. Belts last longer, too.

The difference is like "Day and night". a 2"x72" grinder has more power, more attachments, is faster, easier, etc.

Like the difference between a KIA and a Cadillac, both will get you there but the ride is so much better.

Belt life should be significantly higher too. Not only do you have 30" more abrasive, but the belt will run cooler.

Depending on the style of 2x72 you choose to go with, the various grinding attachments can really make a difference in style and complexity of future builds. Also, the amount of abrasives available for 2x72 machines is massive in comparison to a 2x42. As Robert mentioned be sure and get variable speed. It helps, A LOT.

Blessings,
Joshua

there is more time ( and usually more corners to go around) for the stuff you are sanding to fall off the belt from moving and centrifugal force so the belts might stay cleaner.

If you are having trouble getting your plunge lines even on both sides, a carbide faced file guide is an excellent investment. I use it on most every knife I make, except (plungeless) kitchen knives.
