How much has your Gunting 'cost' you?

This is perhaps something silly - but something I have to get off my chest. For those that have not yet added a Gunting to their collection - BEWARE! They cost faaar more than the advertised price. There are significant hidden costs involved.

I will explain: Firstly, I'd watch Bram do some of his magic on the DVDs. Then I'd have to practice it straight away. My wife is the closest, so I grab her. Before she knows it, I have tomahawked her arm and tried some new grip. Perhaps I'm not gentle enough, so she gets upset and I have to 'bribe' her to talk to me again. Until next time.... Costs thus far: About $200. Next stop divorce, so I'm not allowed to practice any more...

I got myself a new fairly pricey ski jacket. I was wearing my Gunting (live) in my sheath on my belt. Thought to myself - this is a new jacket. I have never tried to draw the Gunting with this on - how fast could I get it out? I whipped it out pretty smoothly, but then thought to complete the move and open the knife kineticaly on my arm (still wearing the jacket). It got hooked, the point dug in and I cut the bottom half of my sleave OFF! Thank you Spyderco. This was the first time I had worn the jacket as well! ! ! !

So, think carefully before you Gunting. No wives or ski jackets even close to the tool please. This will save you hundreds of $$$$.

Greg, how many times have you read warnings against practicing kinetic openings upon yourself? I know that I have posted over a dozen personally. I also know that Bram's introductory tape to the Gunting all but orders you not to do so. How many times must you be warned that somewthing is dangerous before you listen to the warning?

Well, I'm biased, soo..
I've never cut anything that I didn't intend to cut. but, I have a buttload of videos, , training with Bram 2x weekly. I feel my investment is minimal compared to folks with 10 knives. Beware the man who only carries a Gunting..lol. Still my favorite of all time-period. I have demonstrated the G on numerous people, and never really hurt them. My GF stays away from all of it, though. :)

Don't open the G on your leg! it'll just get worse! Trainers, man..Drones are your friend.

Edited to stop panic..

Let's See...

My Gunting Has Cost Me...

$55 (new Jeans, Tried To Carry Gunting In Pocket)

$40 (for River City Belt Sheath, Resulting From Above)

$49.99 (polo Sweatshirt, Red. Gunting Likes To Eat My Clothes)

Having A Really Cool Knife... Priceless ;)

man, them torn cotton lining on them jeans pockets have cost me a lot too! :grumpy:

Methinks that some of you have let the pivot screw to become too loose. That was cause of the one and only time out of 18 months of EDC of my Gunting that it openned in my pocket, I had let the pivot screw become too loose. It needs to be snugged up a bit tighter than most knives because the Horn will try to grab onto your hand as you try to take anything else out of the pocket to which your Gunting is clipped.

This thread has convinced me I need to get a Gunting! Any knife with such an independent personallity and mind of its own, demands respect and ownership! :D Sounds like great fun!

That is a great attitude! I never thought of it that way, but I like it.

Please do be careful that you don't fall prey to "brown belt fever", and alienate your friends and loved ones. :p

My Gunting has given me more then it has taken, by a long shot. So, I'm pretty happy with my collection of them.

You are right, the Gunting has a personality... she can be a tempermental little vixen with a mind all her own...

and the knife tears up jeans, when closed... at least that is what happened to me.

The textured kinetic ramp is a killa! They can rip off year sleeves! Let Bram do a demo on ya and you'll know what I mean.. :p warning : Striking the ramp on yer tigh can cause some serious shopping for new pants.. :D

You guys have got off lighty the Gunting and related training has cost me the the last eight years of my life  and I wouldn't have it any other way. I know the Gunting hasn't been out that long but I first trained with Bram in 96 and haven't stopped

Hey Steve,

You've got no plans as yet to cross the ditch into NZ - for a holiday or to teach Gunting say ;) ???

I'm getting desperate over here - I can see me knocking at your door in OZ before the year is over for some lessons....

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg no plans to come over at this this stage but if there is anything I can help you with just drop me line and I will do my best. My email is in my profile and you are most welcome to come for some lessons

Best wishes

Not to speak of shopping for a new leg.

How can you guys tell all those secrets OPENLY ONLINE..GADS..
Like I should add to this cult of Gunting personality?
Gunting has peripherial costs? Yeah right..well OK..ok..maybe
Gunting has collateral damage to ones pocket book, pocket, clothing. person, relationships et al? hhhhmmmmmmm

Lets see..my life.. 2 marriages..all my money..patent chaos, legal mayhem...
endless travel with no time zone specific in mind...
torn sleeves, pockets, dead jeans...( gotta practice you know!)
multipul Guntings...read that very many...( they are not free to me you know.. I have to buy the darm things!)
people who love me..people who hate me..
hands & fingers are scared of me..( they curse me @ night!)

Of course I have the Guntaholics..
no money or trouble in the world equates how much they have enriched my life....

SO I guess I'm ahead of the game..

FUN!!
The fun begins with meeting old friends & catching up with Bram,it's "slamin & jamin" with the people ,demo with Bram(I love it more than most cause i always learn).Fun continue's when Bram teams you up with a lady, kid or someone smaller than the old guys. You pair up & see, fear, shyness, hesitation(a look that says, what am I doing here, this guys going to kill me)! You smile, change your tone & "click on"you begin to teach. After a time, the person starts to really enjoy themselves, you get a charge when they say," Are you tired of me doing all the pounding,do you want another pardner"??You should see their face.At the end of class, they know they can do G if they have too & they want more.LOL! Their friends are now fresh meat.An additional plus, sore & drained, you happen to glance up see Bram look at you & give that little grin.He knows! When that happens ,can't wait to do it again!! Anyhow, this is what fun is to me!
Be safe,
Jim
