How much is INFI worth?

I know it's proprietary, but I'm wondering how much INFI is worth per pound? Any way to tell?

I don't think there would be any way to find out unless you ask Jerry and i doubt he would know pound for pound or tell you

Not sold by the pound...sold by the inch.... My last Satin was $100 per inch. Of course that is Custom Shop pricing so you have to consider coated @ $75 roughly. You can't purchase INFI bar stock so your cost is machine work plus hand labor and other materials. Worth every penny!!!!

It's an interesting academic question, how the cost of INFI compares to other steels, but we'll never know the answer.

no way to know as it is a specific designer steel. If it was A2 or D2 or any other steel normally available you could get a price. But small steel mill runs are impossible to gauge. Because of the relatively small quantity made I would guess it would be higher than most if not all other steels sold for knives. So m390 and certain CPM steels are expensive compared to regular steels like 440 series or the 10xx series. INFI would be a measure above the cpm steels, but only because of the limited quantities.

It is not just the material, it is also the processing (Heat Treatment ) that adds to the cost.

Yeah, but the HT is done in house. The steel is made at a steel mill for Busse.

I don't believe INFI would be any more expensive than powdered steel.

Its just a conventional cast steel with moderate amount of alloy. I'm sure there are mills that will get you a good price for a custom melt if you order in large enough quantity.

Which book? More aptly may I ask what mill makes it for them? Or is that a bit proprietary too?😉
Thanks, Neal

Scotch Mill...;)

Probably purchased in full sheets to be water jet cut for optimum nesting and reduced waste...

You would think, right? In fact, there was a pic some years ago from a now banned member of a sheet with holes where the blanks were cut out. And yet, of late, Jerry has referred to bar stock or strips and the impact that can have on material utilization. Not sure what changed.

Depends on whether it's in your safe or you are using it to cut/ pry your way out of a car wreck or storm damage or whatever

A lotta money, time, bottles of booze, few F5 keys... :D ;)

Is infi's composition known? I believe I have seen a chart stating the composition of the steel.

I don't know much besides my experience as an end user, which is relatively mild, so don't be surprised if I sound like a crazy person.

Couldn't you possibly ask someone for a quote to make some steel for you using the exact same composition (or a similar one) as infi?

Though that would only be half the equation since the heat treating also costs money (and time which also equals money.)

Like I said, my only knowledge of steel is as an end user. And even that is not vast compared to some. I have my doubts this is possible since it would have been done already.
