I am new to but have started to appreciate Spydercos.
Would someone fill me in on the history and importance of the Worker?

What I have heard is unclear.

Welcome to the forum Jerome,

The Worker was the first model ever produced by Spyderco. So, in many senses it was a "test bed" for Sal Glesser's rather unconventional (at the time) ideas about knife design. It was the first knife to use the round hole opener, and the first to use a pocket clip. On the earliest versions, the swedge grind was actually sharpened, but that feature was dropped on later production. If you read around, and use the excellent search function here, you can find a wealth of info on the Worker.

I really love the Worker. I got two models, an early one with GIN-1 blade and sharpened top swedge and another one with ATS-55 blade and sharper edges on the opening hole for better "grip" on the thumb. Another difference is the clip: the older one has a patent number on it, the newer one just the spyder.
I think the only disadvantage of the worker is the thin and a bit weak tip, but design and function are really good.

The only C-01 Worker I have ever had has been the ATS-55 SE model. Now you have the really old 2 screw Workers in which Deacon has a lot of knowledge about. I think all of the older 2 screw models are either G-2 or GIN-1 ( which I have been told are both the same steel just different labels) are always going to bring $100 plus that is if they are new in the box. I have seen the other newer Workers all over the place. I got my NIB ATS-55 model for $62 but a week later I seen the same knife go for $103 on Ebay.

I am wondering if they ever made the Worker with anything other than a stainless handle?

they made it in coated aluminium too, regular production and the anniversary model above.

$100.00 to around 140.00. The pic of the one with the box and card may command near the higher amount. The last one I saw (just over a year ago) went for about 125.00. Hope this helps.
