Hey yo,
I've got a badass fixed blade with a kraton handle.
yeah, that sounds like on oxymorn,
but I love the shape, and the 5160
(ontario sp43)
I've got a great local maker in my town,
(insta brutal gentlemen blades)
I've met him plenty, though we arent friends or anything.
He charges like, 300 for a knife.
Would it be rude to ask him to just make me a handle for my knife?
What would be a reasonable thing to offer?
I could of course try and whittle something out of wood, stain and finish it,
then blow it when I'm trying to do the whole fit and finish business
cus its hidden tang, though it should be 1" all the way down.
(verified 100 accuracy by way of google images on knife in same line (sp48)

anyway, sorry if this is the wroing spot to post.
Im not on the forum a ton

mutt

I like the SP series. Wonky grinds, but... big and tough. My "do anything with it" knife, my SP-1.
No, it isn't rude to ask for a handle if he does that sort of thing. You want a handle for the knife - not a knife. When you want a new knife, you'll ask him. I am sure he will not be offended by the mere question.

There's nothing rude about offering to pay a man for his craft.

As far as how much to offer, payment is something you should discuss with him. After all, it's his decision whether or not to do the job.

Quite right. It’s also his decision what his time is worth, and how to factor in how much time he expects it to take, and his material and overhead costs are, should he accept the job.

Having never managed his books, I cannot answer any of these questions.

He makes slab handles, so this might be something different than he is used to. Guess it can't hurt to ask though

I'm a cabinet maker.
I make kitchen cabinets.

I make the carcasses and the doors.

If you came to me and told me you had the carcasses but only wanted me to make the doors, I would politely decline and refer you to an online custom door maker.

The reason is, that I'm being asked to put my name on someone else work.

Tread lightly when you ask is all I can say.

I tried to replace the Kraton handle on a Master Hunter and ended up ruining the knife. You might be better off having a custom made.

Another story that should convince everyone to avoid kraton handles like the plague. Sorry for your problems though.

What don’t you like about kraton? There are many compositions. Or do you not like synthetic handles in general? Or possibly hidden tangs?

I agree with the answers so far, it wouldn’t hurt to ask if he’d consider making you a handle.

They soften and get sticky and gummy. Two examples in just this thread.

This put a picture in my head....
having someone's whole crappy cabinet break off their wall, into a shattered mess, with your beautiful doors of course attached, with just a big piece of wood with H. AL on it (I don't know your name, so, username it is!), and being blamed. That really does suck, surely it's happened once or twice in your industry?

Can you please quote one post in this thread where someone said they had a sticky or gummy handle? I'm not asking for both... just one.

Right.

I've never had it happen with any of mine.
Do a search with the key words sticky kraton and you will see a lot of posts about that.
I plead guilty to assuming that is why the OP wants a new handle, and the same thing with AlbertaEd. Which he later clarified is not the case.

It's a common thing in a lot of industries.

Everything bad is blamed on the last person to touch it.

It's not universal - but - I've seen it happen a lot.
