How much is this worth?

Sorry to be posting one of these threads. I have a knife that was a family members who passed away. It's an Emerson CQC-6. I would like to sell it for my grandmother (it was my uncle that passed away) but have no idea what it would be worth. I took it by a knife shop here in my area, but they didn't know anything about it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

You should give better detail as to the condition. Does it have any excessive blade play, has it been dropped etc.

I'm not sure but it looks like a custom. If that is the case and it only has a scuffed blade, it is probably worth big bucks(Just a semi educated guess $600-1200). I'm sure others more inclined will chime in soon though.

Jon

Edit-- If it is production it is worth much less.

your best bet is to ask the guys over at the EKI forums here or at USN (I think you may have better traffic there). And a refurb by EKI would surely make the value go up - better for your grandma. looks definitely like a custom - I don't think there were any production emerson with bolsters (like that).

spyden is right. Check over at the Emerson Knives Forum. Go to the Emerson Gallery and Glossary to see some examples of the CQC-6. The forum looks pretty dead. I imagine they are all at another forum, but you can ask anyway.

The CQC-6 is only custom. There were no production models. The closest production knives might be the CQC-7, but the handles are different.

I'm sorry to hear about your uncle, but your grandmother should get good money for the knife, at least. It can be refurbished and should be worth more. Ernie Emerson's customs go for around $1000 on the secondary market.

wonder how those scuffs came about? notice there aren't any on the other grind at the tanto tip? And it doesn't seem to have come from resharpening either? otherwise, that's one fine looking knife....

Thanks all for the information. There is no blade play when it is out at all. I will check the other forums. What does the refurb intail? How much would that cost? I guess that's also a good question for the other forum.

Thanks so much.

Rob

It looks to me like it needs to be sent back to Ernie for a refurb

That will increase its value dramatically with minimal cost to you.

You need to call Emerson Knives and set up sending it in to be refinished. Ernie will do this for either no charge or minimal charge depending on how much damage there is.
It has the SpecWar logo on it, I cant read the year, if there is one, under it, so we know it's not that old.
On the current aftermarket, once it's refinished, it should bring you between $900-1050.
If you dont want to be bothered with the refurb, you could probably sell as is for about $750-800.

First off sorry about your Uncle, but he did have good taste in knives.

spyken posted that you should check the USN forum if you don’t know it can be found here . You will need to sign up, no cost just some questions and they will send you a password (they kind of regulate people based on their behavior so if you have pissed them off in the past and they know who you are you are not getting in). Go to the "Usual Suspect Sanctum" once on and post there. If you don't know the USN was originally started by a bunch of Emerson fans and has grown from there to include a bunch of other stuff. You will get the best info there about Emerson Knives.

Also have you checked out the Emerson website at http://www.emersonknives.com/ ? There is some contact info there that you could get the referb info/price from (I don't see it listed so you might need to call them to find it out). The referb really should be almost nothing and shipping costs should be the majority of the cost. Another company that I have dealt with in the past charges $25 + shipping to make the knife look new.

I have to disagree - very strongly - with my esteemed colleagues here. DO NOT send that knife in for a refurb! In my opinion it would reduce the value of the knife substantially!

Please email me for more details on this issue.

Ok, my learned friend Jbravo has determined it to be an undated piece which would add value. He is extremely knowledgable about these so you probably want to email him for info.

Thank all of you again for the information.

Yes, this knife says Specwar and has no date on it.

Jbravo,

Email sent.

Thanks,
Rob
