I know what you mean, thats always being said, but I dont understand it at all.
Whenever something is being sold it is a retail sale. If a knife is "being sold for 25% off retail", then the new price is the "retail" price for that partuicular salesman. I am always under the impression that no matter what I pay for a knife it is the retail price. Now I can see selling an item for less than the MSRP, because that it the actualy manufacturer's "landmark" of how much the knife should be sold for by others.
However, I have never seen anyone sell a knife for the MSRP, simply because they want people to think they are saving money.
I guess what I'm asking along with your post's question, is what exactly are people defining as retail ?
I would define "retail price" as MSRP. If you go to the Emerson website, for instance, the Commander can be purchased for $220. Now, if you go to 1SKS, you get the same knife for $170. That's a good example of "not paying retail".
