How much can you over correct a 5160 quenched and tempered blade about 12” long before it will break? I tried clamping straight to angle iron tempered for 1hr at 405, failed. any other ideas I would be very grateful, took me long time and don’t want to snap it, but sickens me knowing it’s warped if I just leave it. Thanks

First, you straighten on the second temper. You overcorrect by an amount equal to the amount of warp ( use shims or nails). In other words - correct by a reverse bend. You may need several additional tempers to get it straight on some badly warped blades.

The extra tempering won't affect the hardness any real amount. ( maybe a single point of hardness for a blade that gets 4 tempers). Some folks drop the temperature 5 or 10 degrees during extra tempers.

So if it’s out a 1/4 you go 1/2” in opposite direction? 1/4 back to straight plus 1/4 over correct. I wanted to post some photos but I can’t locate the insert photo button.

he was suggesting counter bending an equal amount of the warp. it usually works. in my experience if that wont work, counter bend twice the amount of warp. i lay my blade on a countertop, with the peak of the warp toward the ceiling. then i use pennies, dimes, nickels to find the size of the space between the countertop and the bottom of the blade. use that coin or combo of coins to counterbend to the angle iron on the other side and re-temper. if it does not work, double the coin(s).
