This will be the first year that I'll be able to go to the NY Custom Knife Show on Fri. Should be able to get there at the opening bell and have my pick of the floor before all the good stuff is gone.
First stop will be Bob Dozier's table. I've been eying his micarta handle folders for many years now and I think I might just buy one Fri.
My question, stated in the subject is only the first part.
The second part is, how do I hide the purchase from my wife.
Come on, you all have been doing it for years.
There's only so many times I can use: "This thing? Why honey, I've had it for years"!

You can always say you got it in trade. It's not a lie really since you did trade cash for it!;)

Good luck, and instead of worrying about how much cash to bring, bring just enough for the Dozier and either (1) hide your plastic from yourself and start a wish list for next year, or (2) take your ATM card and hope you don't go bankrupt!

Two words............CREDIT CARD!!!

I have never hid my knife purchases from my wife. She would see that I had a new knife anyway. So just do it, you shouldn't have to explain. Put it this way, if your wife is the type that spends $100 every few weeks to get her hair and nails done, do you question it? Sure ya' do! But it makes her happy, right? So she continues to do it. The same thing applies to your knife hobby, except you do it once or twice a year at a knife show, not every other week. So enjoy the show and hope to see you there.

Bring what you can honestly afford to spend (just make sure it's at least $1,000 or you'll be kicking yourself afterwards).

Don't even bother trying to hide your new purchase(s) from your wife. You're entitled to spend some money on yourself and your hobbies.

Besides, how would you like it if she hid her spending from you? A good friend of mine found out that his wife had hidden $29,000 in spending from him.

Went to Las Vegas last year with $8,000.00 cash and still put 3 k on my credit cards.IT IS NEVER ENOUGH AT A KNIFE SHOW :) :) :)

All things considered, that's a good problem to have. For those of us who are *ahem* "in transition" due to the current economic downturn, just kicking tires will have to suffice. But in all honesty, I can't see myself leaving the show without at least one new toy... some genius at Chase just raised my credit card limit. ;)

How much can you bring? Seriously, as much as I try to go into a show with some specific pieces in mind, I always wind up getting something I hadn't counted on & spending more than I anticipated.

Regarding your wife, if she is anything like mine, just bring home something with a black handle (or in my case, ivory micarta) & she's unlikely to notice.

Bring your wife with you...Maybe she'll make good trading-stock.:D.:D.

on knives,food,etc.
i would recommend bringing that much with you,you never know what your going to find that youll fall in love with.
