i'm interested in buying some silver solder for some projects, but haven't used it before...i'm wondering how quickly this stuff is used up...since buying a whole pound comes out so much cheaper than an ounce at a time, wondering if i should just go with a pound...on the other hand, if one ounce is enough for lots and lots of jobs, there's no point in buying more than i can use in a lifetime!

any indication you can give me is helpful - i realize it depends on what you use it for...how many guards can you solder with an ounce, for example...

oh and also, and this is probably more critical - how much can i expect to go through before i learn to do it right?!!!

thanks in advance...

Best thing is to try a little, see how you like it then by a pound-or ten.

I have a couple of pounds of solder that I'll proubly never use up because I haven't been able to solder stainless with it. I now use anouther type that I have a good supply of.

Not knowing how much and what projects you will use, it's still better to have a good supply, then to be right in the middle of something and realize that your out or don't have enough.

Most projects like gaurds don't require that much though...

Mark,
Hi this is DaQo'tah

I got some low temp silver solder to make my knives, I got just a small kinda tube of it from Radio shack. I didnt know at the time how much was in it. But it turns out to be enough for a few blades. (I use it to solder on the brass guards onto the tang)

Then because the solder is in the tube and the tube has a cover on it, I didnt know how much was left one time and right in the middle of a job I ran OUT!

I ran around my shop and looked in the drawers for any solder I have picked up from stores in the past. I tried to use some stuff I got for pipes. Well it didnt really work that well. I ended up banging the whole thing off and tring again the next day. I still just use the little tubes of solder , the amount of money for the big spool is just not in my budget, but to tell the truth, I have by now spent well more for the 4 tubes I have used that if I would have picked up that near Life-time coil of solder.
