How much space should be between the blade and the liner when closed?

I'm not sure if liner is the proper word for it, but I was just curious. On my BM710, it seems that the tip is real close to the inside of the handle, and I guess I just don't understand what makes it stop in the first place. If I flip it shut I'm always worried the blade is slamming against the inside and would be screwing the edge up, even though that's not the case from what I read.

It is stopped by the blade "Kick" on the bottom of the tang next to the handle.

So that will pretty much stop the blade edge from hitting anything even when flipped shut a little on the hard side right? I mean will the blade flex to a point of making contact with anything bad for just a second? I wouldn't think so but I'm paranoid considering this is my first good knife.

Pogo is right. The blade will not contact and bottom out. WHen it is closed, try this: use a tool that will press on the blade spine but not touch the liners. Press down as hard as you can. If you do this under a lighted desk magnifyer, you'll be able to see that the edge is far from touching anything.

Now, sometimes the edge of the blade will touch the sides of the liners when opening the knife. My 975, for example, slides against the side of the liner just at the start of the opening. The reason is the lateral force on the blade when you push on the thumbwheel (or thumbstud in your case). Even though you're pushing the blade out, it's next to impossible to avoid pressing "down" laterally, forcing the blade lightly against the liner.

Ok thanks, that makes it clearer.

My blade doesn't rub when I open it, it's centered almost perfectly. That was one of the things I told GPknives to check for before they sent it out, that and no blade play.

Here is a bad picture of how close the tip is when closed. Just for reference to illustrate what I meant before. Doesn't seem like I'd be able to push as hard as I can without making it go that 1/8" to the bottom but I'll take your word for it.
