How much wear does a waved knife put on your pants?

I ordered a waved Endura and have read on hear that they cause some damage to your pants when used.

Is it so bad that you'll ruin your pockets in a couple months or something?

Also i sometimes wear levi's dockers to work. Will it ruin these quickly?

Quickly depends on how often you open the knife and how hard.

So Yes, after a while it will ruin your pants. How long that depends on you.

I've got a couple of EKI's that I wear everyday. I wave about a half dozen times a day. Wear jeans to work and around the house. After about 6 months of doing this I've noticed a little fraying on the pocket of an older pair of jeans. The location of the fraying doesn't quite match up with where the wave catches and seems to be more associated with the clip instead of the wave. Hope this helps.

I have a modified Pacific Salt, very similar to the Waved Endura, I've seen no problems with my pockets at all.

If it's some fraying at the pockets after 6 or so months of normal knife usage then that's not a big deal. I was just worried i'd be ripping up my pants in like a couple weeks or something.

I think the wave on Spydercos is less aggressive than on the original Emersons. You really shouldn't see significant damage. Saberman is right also, that you don't have to open it too hard.

Being a pocket clip maker and Emerson approved Wave maker on existing knives I have to test what I do for customers. As a result many of my pants are extremely worn out and torn, as well as shredded on the pockets. This is the result of numerous slippings on and off of pocket clips both too loose and too tight, and from testing one Waved knife after another. Far more than your average user I assure you.

For me this has become so much of an issue (mainly due to my wife) that I have refused to own a Waved knife at all myself because my pants are all immaculate and in good repair with the exception of my right and left pockets where you stick your folder to carry and wave it open. If my wife had her way pocket clips would be out too. You guys have no idea how many times I've had to hear, "you're not wearing those are you?", or "can you change your pants before we go, because you look like a homeless person with those on.". This is typically what I have to listen to before we go anywhere in public together. The other day she bought me a new pair of pants on sale at the mall and as she presented them to me she says, "these are not 'shop pants'. Meaning no Wave or pocket clip use on these pants.

Truthfully, I am on the extreme end of the spectrum. The thing about the Wave is that just because you have it installed on your blade doesn't mean you have to use it everytime you want your knife out. Its a dicipline you have to make yourself do. However, I can guarantee you if you open and close your Waved folder hard a dozen times in a row it will indeed takes its toll on the corner of a new pair of pants let alone using it each and everytime you need your knife out. I've seen it myself ruin an otherwise immaculate pocket corner by forming a little hole or wear mark right where it catches to open your blade. This is the case on even the easiest opening ones I've used. The trick is to learn to use it on a pair you don't much care about. Then only use it as you need it from then on. Otherwise all your pants will look just like mine.

I can testify to the damage a pocket clip can and will do over time also. Just look at my pocket. Granted its seen lots more sliding on and off of a pocket clip than you guys but the point is yes they do cause stress on your pocket. And people wonder why I love those old integral FRN clips so much.

Strider and Buck/Strider knives are particularly terrible pocket eaters. I've had guys ask me to retension them as well as replace them and I've also had them offer to sell me theirs on occasion because of this. One guy was active duty and kept getting in trouble from carrying a stiff clipped Buck/Strider that technically made him out of uniform to where he was in trouble all the time with his superior for the ragged condition of his pockets. Sorry for the rant. But you guys that think they don't wear your pockets are guilty of wishful thinking. They sure do. Even still I love them though and thats the thing. So do you. Its just the wives that hate em!:D

After reading STR's post, I do want to add that I don't continually open the knife with the wave feature. I probably use the wave 1 out of every 6-12 times and I don't carry the Salt as often as I do my other knives. That being said, I've seen some pocket damage due to pocket clips and no damage from the wave.

Oh Yea! Forgot about how bad Strider clips are.

Only have a PT that I carry without a clip.

I don't think the endura/delica waved models will ruin your pants as fast as the EKI models will. The EKI models I have are all FAR more hooked and pointy than the ones I've seen from the endura/delica design.

Honestly, though, if you're that concerned with it, I'd go to a tailor and have them sew a discreet bit of soft leather to the pocket- making sure to cover the surfaces that will be affected- so that the wear won't be as bad. I will tell you, though that I rarely open my EKI knives via the wave feature. I've always considered that a method of opening reserved for emergencies.

Oh, and I carry my Strider in a belt pouch- precisely because it can and will ruin your pockets.

Emersons are major pocket killers , waved Spydies are a lot smoother , and have better angles .

Sorry to chime in late.
I carry an Emerson CQC-10 pretty frequently in my rotation, and use the Wave opener nearly every time. My pants don't show wear from the Wave.
They do, however, start to show wear from knife clips after about a year or so of constant carry. Still takes a while, though.

I primarily wear (when not in uniform)jeans, carharts, and cargos. I have only noticed wear from pocket clips on my BDU's, never got in trouble though. My jeans and carharts seem to hold up the best. I even have a pair of jeans made by wrangler that I bought because of the leather patch right wear my pocket clip goes. Pretty sad huh. I've had some kind of knife clipped in my pocket for the better part of fifteen years. I will say that my model one folder is probably the tightest clip on a folder I have ever had. I can honestly clip it and forget it.

Well, all my jeans have pocket clip disease. It isn't from a waved knife, but from carrying and using a knife for so many years.
