how much would a custom mod be? (busse customshop)

just wondering if its possible to get a custom modification on a preexisting busse knife from the custom shop. specifically, on the xxxl nick, wich just BEGS to be be modified into another knife...
the mods id want would be to basically cut the height of the knife down so that the edge was paralell to the talon hole,
put a very, VERY small indexing notch instead of a choil (see falkniven for examples, i could proabbly actually do without the notch (about 1.5mm in width))
grind a deeper back finger area into the handles so they would be like the basic series handle ergo's
make the tip of the knife ither like the basic 5 (but 6.5-7" long instead of 5), or put a slight clip point on it
move the saber grind up to allow for a better cutting geometry at that blade heigth

so basically, youd end up with a saber ground basic 7 style knife (maybe a little shorter) with a full tang, and infi steel

any thoughts on if thats possible, or if it can even be done at the custom shop? (if i had the money, i would probably be willing to buy one and have another custom maker do the mods)

something to this effect

i guess my question is this, would it be cheaper to just go full custom from scratch, or have a preexisting knife modified?

If similar to our chef's knife, it need approx. USD 250.00 to open a new mould. But it should be different from other products and suppliers.

;)

Kinda looks like a Satin Jack?

it does, but its between an 1/2"-1" longer, the handles back end is ground down to make another finger indentation (wich id actually like to be more dramatic, i want the handles to be lik on the basics, where you have a very pronounced palm swell), and there is no choil (an indexing notch maybe, but no choil)

the 2 things that keep me from getting a satin jack are the choil, and the 3rd gen handles. i hate choils from the bottom of my being, and dont feel they serve any useful purpose other then to catch on the material your cutting. if i want to "choke up on a blade" for "detail work", i'll grab the spine between my fingers every time. if i need to hold the knife very securly while doing "detail work" i shouldnt have to choke up on it in the first place.

and i wont buy a utility knife with the regular 3rd gen handles, because in my hand, it makes the knife feel like its constantly falling forward, like i cant get control of the blade unless im holding the butt area of the knife. if the index finger area was wider, it wouldnt be a problem, or if the pinky area was deeper it wouldnt be a problem.

the handle on a satin jack can be modified, but there isnt really any way to get the "finger choil" area back, unless i make a scalloped edge out of it, or make a rather drastic and ugly recurve out of it

so, im left with the option of iether having a satin jack sans the choil and with a modified handle from complete scratch, at wich point i would make other modifications to the handle and blade,

or, have one made from the preexisting blade of the xxxl-nick.

to have it made from scratch as a custom could cost anywhere from 650-1200$ depending on how fancy i wanted to get, and my question is,

would it be cheaper to start out with the xxl-nick wich can be had for 250-300$ on the after market, and just have it modified at the custom shop? the answer to that kind of depends on how much the kind of drastic modifications im looking at would cost. cause if the mods would cost 600$, it may be easier/better to just start from scratch and deal with the wait time.

Get a BIG bottle of 30 yr old Scotch, give it to Jerry, have him drink a goodly chunk of it and while he's drunk plead for a GFD like you want. You may get lucky and have it in a year or four.

been there done that! better get a half gallon and have sushi delivered to the "shop" some of my bestus customs have been made with fish stains on them!!

ahhhhh, the smell of burning infi chips :p :p

I think that the XXXL NICK is a great all around knife for that size. The handle is very comfortable, and the tip could not be reinforced any more. I think that it would make a great camp knife, as it would be a superb cutter and chopper. The lack of a pointy tip doesn't concern me. I can't think of a single instance on a camping trip that I needed my big blade to poke something, (actually I can, but this entire post would likely get deleted.):D

The XXXL is not for the kitchen, it is a hard use knife in a unique design.

They do make one hell of a cleaver though. :D My wife’s been buying chickens for the dogs every now and then. My job has been to chop them up.

Lumps of chicken going everywhere. :p :D

Is anyone else having problems looking at Josh's pictures. When I click on the picture it get a You Are Not Permitted to View page. I'm confused.

Cheers,
BJB :D

p.s. Josh could you email me the pics? Thanks.

BJB,
I get the exact same message as you do. Its also the same message I got when I changed my email address. Be careful I got turfed out completely doing that. :D
Ian. :D

that may have helped, changed the pics over to my verizon site

YEHUDI: thank you for your repsonses :) it would definitely be an expensive project if i had it done at the busse custom shop, i just wonder if it would be cheaper to have them build from scratch, or grind down the pre-existing blade.

i know you could do cooler stuff with it, but what im looking for is the best hard use every day carry knife available - anywhere, and busse combat is the best i know of. so far however, the basic 5 and 9 are my favorites, but they are made of mod-infi. since im broke, its not worth the money to have a custom done, but if i ever do have enough cash to spend on it, id like to have the above blade made, wich is very close to the basic 7 in design, but heavier and with a full tang, closer to the satin jack in blade.

iether one of the mods would be what i consider to be close to a perfect full utility knife. if iits 1/2 the cost to get it ground down from the nick then it is to do a full custom (using the most basic feature set possible to reduce end cost), then id rather have it ground down from the xxxl nick. of course, if i had a grinder, + an extra 300$, id probably just grind one down myself

if i had it redone by a custom maker, do you think its possible to send it into the busse shop to have it inspected to see if its up to specs with maintaining the warranty???

thats kind of a pipe dream, since if i could do that, i wouldnt want busse combat to get inundated with sent in knife mods for that purpose....

just wonderin...

Unless you're willing to pay quite a bit, having another maker do it is an option. I don't think the warranty idea will work, but if the maker does it right then the knife will be as durable as you'll need it (though the warranty would be nice).

im thinkin i will have a custom maker modify it

just not to sure who i should be asking about it though... sent a p.m. to rlinger, not sure of who else does this kind of work (not to sure if rlinger does it, but i thought it was worth a try)

Josh,

It does look a lot like a Satin Jack. Cool  :)

You're talking about a massive amount of material being removed and then a complete regrinding of the blade. Yowza!

It can be done, but it will be quite a bit of work. I would suggest that you start over with a custom. As for the warranty, we only warrant modifications done by our shop.
