How much would it cost to have this knife made?

Pretty self explanatory question for any custom makers out there. I basically can't find the right fixed blade knife to fit my tastes or needs. There is always something wrong with any knife i look at (fixed). So i took to drawing this, which is exactly the knife i want. Its basically a fixed blade version of my Sage 2 only stretched out a little and with a recurve added. I primarily use my knife for fishing trips to clean fish, so i kept the blade fairly small in order to keep control and also a notch to choke up on it (i almost always hold my Sage 2 choked up) yet large enough to take on other chores like chopping small branches to make rod holders or clear a spot or to baton thinner pieces of wood, skinning larger game etc, basic camping chores really. I would need grippy G10 on it with maybe some notches filed into the scales, and since i wouldnt want to drop my knife in a lake or something, i need that lanyard hole. Blade thickness would have to be at least 3mm. The only thing i dont have figured out is what kind of steel to use for this knife? I am not a steel snob. I would want something easy to sharpen in case i would have to do it in the field. Corrosion is not an issue for me and i am not opposed to carbon steels since i take care of my knives and oil them. In fact i like the look of a good patina. I need something fairly easy to sharpen that takes a good keen edge and holds it for a reasonable while. Any input is appreciated on this. I do not have the money right now to finance this little project, but thats why i am asking for estimates so i can know how much to spend and save accordingly. Hopefully i am able to attach the drawing! Thank you all for your input!

I had a custom fixed blade made to my specifications @ 20 years ago using AST 34 (?? hope I got that right) stainless. It was a little bigger than yours, but used cherry for the handle and did NOT have any file work. I paid @ $125 with sheath. I'd guess that the same knife today would be $250 - $350. Add $$ for something like S125V or some other exotic steel.

For carbon steel, 1095, or 5160 would both work out well. For stainless, 440C, 154CM, would be good choices.

I like the pic you have drawn and that looks like a knife that could/would do the things you talked about. Maybe a thickness of 5/32", that would be .157" or 4mm. That should be good for what you outlined the jobs to be and with a ffg on it, that would not be overly thick.

Good luck on finding a maker. I would go over to the maker's section and email some of these guy's and see what they say. I had Eddie White, www.shadowknives.com, make me a knife and was very pleased with it. Great workmanship, and a very reasonable price.

There are a number of makers, on this forum, who would be happy to quote you a price.

I have knives made by the following makers and can attest to the quality of the products they turn out:

JK handmade knives
AA Forge
Gray Wolf knives
Hargis knives
Ryan Weeks
Lon Humphries
Mark Wohlwend
GL Drew
Bryan Breeden
Koyote

Thank you all for your input! Neo, that elk hunter says 3 1/2'' blade but is that measured from the cutting edge or total lenght from the scales (which would include the second choil)? Thanks for the suggestions and links!

I guess without the choil.

Total length is 8.25
Roughly visual the scales cover half the knife.
So the blade + second choil should be 4.125

Hi -

JK could make that in 01 steel for you -

The fine jimping on the thumb ramp and choil is an extra cost option, as is the G10, but I am guessing that would be very doable an for a reasonable cost.

best regards -

Where are you in Texas? I know several custom makers there, and I might be able to fnd one close to you.

I like the design, reminds me of the Ken Onion Skinner a bit. The only suggestion I have on your design is the little bit of recurve, either take the sharpened edge all the way off the back, or eliminate it. As drawn it would be difficult to sharpen.

Best of luck!

while you are waiting for your custom, this $20 gerber profile and a grinder or dremel or some files would just about fit your model. I reshaped the blade spine, and the birds beak at the back of the handle. would also be easy to remove the finger grove in the handle and it would then be close to your sketch. blade thickness is 1/8". funny you should post this, as I have been tinkering with this knife just today. could throw 2 or 3 in your tackle box just in case
