I was looking for a price range for damascus shirt (collar) bones. Is it even possible to have them made? as they're really thin, and so close to fabric, would it even be feasible to use them? any way,

Generally speaking, that sort of thing is made of Titanium.

I think he meant shirt collar stays, which are usually made from plastic. I've seen good ones made from bone.

I don't know of any, but I don't think you would want to stain the collar in case the damascus gets wet. That's why they're usually made of plastic. But if you like, this place offers them in brass and steel: http://www.stmc.com/forma.htm

I'm really not sure what you're talking about,
but you might want to try one of the knifemaker forums.
I had my wife's initial made in damascus for me, by a maker whom I can no longer remember. :( Sorry.

Damascus collar stays?

First, why? Nobody can see your collar stays.

Second, given the number of times I've sent collar stays through the washing machine and given Damascus's tendency to rust and given rust's tendency to stain, bad ideas.

Titanium, on the other hand, would work. But brass is good enough for me. And I like brass because they're heavy enough that I usually notice them before they go through the wash.

Obviously it for personal enjoyment. I think he knows no one can see those stays.

Or a potential stealth weapon. :D

You know, I could have swore I said that already.... ;) Of course, there's always Damasteel....

Both untreated Ti and brass tarnishes/surface oxides that then leeches unto the cloth causing stains. I personally prefer bone or SS over plastic. And with the SS ones, I can bend the tabs to give the collar a nice curvature.

Dijos: To answer your question, it's something you can do yourself. It's just a matter of finding thin enough stock (might be the hardest part since something that thin isn't usually seen in knife supply places), and then profiling it to shape.

I don't think he's talking about the shirt collar stays because no one would see them and why would you bother? I believe he's talking about 'collar tips', the metal triangles that attach to the...you guessed it, tips of the shirt collar. It's very popular with western styled shirts. Here's an example if you don't know what I'm talking about. http://www.mrboots.com/images/cw_accessories/collar_tips/collar_tips-01.jpg
If that's what he's talking about, I have no idea how much it would cost. If he's talking about the shirt collar stays, I have no idea why he would want damascus ones.

umm..wow
I do mean collar stays. I know that nobody would see them, but I would know. After I posted, I realized that since damascus is partly carbon steel, any sweat would have disasterous effects on my shirts. I may just do it myself-I can do thin enough metal, and now that damascus is out of the equation, I may move on to cufflinks. :D

I'm a big fan of cufflinks. I believe that if a man wants to pierce something, it should be his shirt sleves, not is navel. :D

I've got some really nice Damascus cufflinks too. But they don't tend to attract compliments as some of my others do.

There's always damasteel. I recently purchased a Cartier Rollerball pen made with Damasteel on the grip. So far it's not even close to staining... ;)
