How much would you pay?

For a new BK5? There's one on Ebay that may for about $100. I guess things are worth what the market says they are worth.

I hardly ever pay "market" for a knife. I am willing to wait for one that falls within the range of what I consider to be the value of the knife to me. That said, I occasionally find knives of some particular distinction that makes them more valuable to me than the market price. I never give above MSRP for one that is used, or that I intend to use, Buying used, or even flawed is a great way to acquire knives for less. But if mint is your yearning, just wait and watch. Eventually one will be mislisted or go "under the radar" because of the ending time or an odd description. The "gotta have it now", or "gotta have that one" mentality will cost you money.

There is somethng about the BK5 that makes people think they are worth their weight in gold. When the knife was new, you could buy for $60-$70. I tracked two down recently, and the owner wanted what I thought were astronomical prices for them, and would only sell them together (as a set). If discontinued production knives skyrocket in price like that, then I guess I have my retirement all taken care of with the pieces I have.

But I'm with Codger - I'll wait until I come across one at a reasonable price. If I never find one, then I never find one. However, I would not pay MSRP for a used or open box piece. Who here has ever paid MSRP for a new knife?

And yes, it also has to do with what the market is willing to pay. Early last week, there was a desert tan BK7 listed on eBay. I always wanted a desert tan, but they were discontinued before I got around to buying. I watched the aution, and it sold for $56.99 with $12 shipping. So that knife was worth almost $70 to someone. After that auction was done, the same seller listed two more. One sold for $52 with shipping, and I think the other sold for around $54 with shipping. An example of market forces at work.

My friend Terry poses a question to himself every time he is considering a 'significant' purchase. My wife and I have dubbed this 'the Terry rule.' When looking at something like the BK5 on eBay, ask yourself: "How bad do you want it?"

Well, since I happen to know who you're talking about here, why don't I set the story straight. The two knives you tracked down were both Magnum Camps but were not both BK5s, which is the Camillus model. The other knife was a mint condition Blackjack Magnum Camp, which is scarce as hen's teeth in any condition, let alone mint. How many have you seen for sale, lately, of either model? Scarcity usually dictates a higher price. There are all kinds of discontinued production knives that have skyrocketed in price, especially when they're models that are in demand.

10-4 Charlie, points well taken. The scarcity of a piece plus the demand for that piece will dictate the price of a piece regardless of how much it cost new, or what the MSRP was originally.

I mean no offense or disrespect to you Charlie. I was primarily interested in your Camillus BK5, and not necessarily the Blackjack. Honestly, I have never seen a Blackjack Magnum Camp Knife, new or used. And you weren't the only person that responded to my WTB BK5 thread, so I wasn't just referring to you. However, you were the only one that had a Blackjack Magnum Camp.

Incidently, for anyone who lost track, the NIB Camillus BK5 on eBay sold for $114.50 (shipping included $107.50 was high bid + $7.00 shipping).

I was bidding on it till it went to the high 90s. Oh well, I can buy something else. Or a couple of something elses.

How much is my BK77 Becker "Extreme" worth? New in box?

The Becker Extreme BK77 hasn't been discontinued yet.

MSRP is USD 390.99, as listed on the Camillus website, but
it's sold for about USD 225-250 at many online knife shops.

Yeah, but there's always something irritating about having to settle for second choice. ;) Seems as though I usually end up looking back and asking myself if what I really wanted wouldn't have been worth a couple bucks more.

How do you define a couple bucks more?

The BK5 was sold for $107.50 but you don't know how much the
buyer might have been willing to pay. Maybe his limit was $150.

I think you should find out the realistic price for the knife you are
interested in, based on previous eBay auctions, and then set your
own personal limit. Otherwise you might pay much more than it's
worth and/or you really wanted to pay ;)

The Camillus BK5 That recently sold on eBay was definitely within my price range. Had I not found a different piece I was also interested in over the weekend, I would have certainly bid on the BK5. I didn't 'settle' for a different knife, but instead purchased something I actually wanted more, and I will probably use a lot more than the BK5. And seeing as how it was more expensive than what I would have been willing to pay for the BK5, I am now out of the knife buying market for a while. The BK5 knives are out there.

Another one on eBay now. Buy it Now for $150. Opening bid is $100.

I just picked one up, or I would bid on it.

Looking for a BK-4 Machax now.
