How my hand feels: 0560 / PM2 / Bone Collector

I just got these three amazing knives and wanted to do a quick run-down of my opinions on how they are making my hands feel. Pretty much reviewing random things about each knife not related to how well they cut stuff and stand up to beatings.

ZT 0560: average cost around $275

  • Excellent weight. Love that I feel like I'm holding a solid tool in my hand.
  • Not the thinnest knife but considering what you are getting it's pretty thin.
  • Very nice 3D machined G10 and Titanium grip. Most solid grip out of the three. Perfect size for my hand when the blade is closed and flipped.
  • Flipper is pretty smooth. Currently only flips the blade about half-way but the knife is brand new.
  • When flipping, my finger runs across the etched area for your thumb rest and it is pretty rough. Many people say they have to lightly file this down.
  • The flipper makes a solid guard when the blade is out and is very comfortable.
  • Lots of configuration options for the clip for maximum comfort.
  • It's almost impossible to use my thumb to disengage the locking bar. Between how rough it is with the etching, how little surface is exposed to press against, and how the bar is getting stuck (it's not worn in yet so I'm sure this will change), I need two hands to disengage the bar.
Overall: Once the locking bar has been broken in and I can actually move it with one hand, I think the only issue I'll have with this knife is the rough edges near the flipper and the lack of surface on the locking bar to press against with your thumb to disengage it. Just trying to break this in my index finger is in a lot of pain rubbing against the etching for the thumb rest and my thumb is in a bit of pain from the etching on the lock bar. The knife is just absolutely wonderful to hold. It has a perfect weight to it. The blade flips out so smooth, and goes back in just as smooth. When locked there is zero play making it very stury. Very well balanced, and the quality and craftsmanship is just flawless.

Spyderco PM2 Digi-Camo: average cost around $110

  • Thin knife with a nice light weight to it.
  • G10 textured handle provides a nice grip and is very comfortable to hold both open and closed.
  • Blade is super smooth to open. The hole in the blade is a perfect size for my thumb making it very easy to guide the blade completely from closed to locked without requiring any flicking action.
  • Textured but comfortable thumb rest and partial choil for doing controlled work.
  • Lots of configuration options for the clip for maximum comfort.
  • Very nice lock bar design. Extremely easy to disengage the lock bar comfortably with my middle finger, and close the blade with my index finger. The rest of my hand and fingers naturally rest clear of the blade's path.
Overall: I can't say there's anything about the PM2 that I don't like! The combination of the light weight and comfort is wonderful. The blade is amazingly easy to deploy and close. The blade also has no play when locked. Being so thin you can carry it in just about any pocket and have it look good. Very tough choice, but I think the PM2 is slightly edging out the 0560 only because of the pain factor I am currently experiencing with the 0560's edging. I'll have to revisit that once the 0560 is broken in and my hands man up a bit more ;)

Benchmade Bone Collector: average cost around $110

  • Pretty thick knife, but amazingly comfortable in the hand.
  • Nice weight to the knife as well.
  • Every inch of this knife is very smooth to the touch.
  • Walnut handle is an absolute pleasure to hold.
  • AXIS lock is very smooth to use and requires very little effort to disengage.
  • Deploying the blade is amazingly smooth and can go from closed to locked open while keeping my thumb on the blade comfortably.
  • AXIS lock assist when opening and closing is very nice. It may not be for everyone, but I find it to be a wonderful feature.
  • Very comfortable and easy to disengage the AXIS lock to close the blade with my thumb and middle finger. Can completely close the blade with my index finger and the rest of my hands and finger are comfortably out of the way of the blade path.
  • Only two options for the clip instead of the four that the PM2 and the 0560 have.
Overall: I think this might be my favorite knife out of the three right now. It's the perfect weight for me in my hand, and the Walnut is the most comfortable thing to hold. It's about as grippy as the G10 on the PM2. The curves and texture are flawless. Releasing the blade is the smoothest of the three and the assisted closing makes it effortless to quickly close and put away. Being the thickest of the three it may not be for everyone who prefer the thinner less noticable look, but I don't mind it. There's zero play in the blade. I was a bit nervous with the AXIS lock's security but I've tried to move the blade in any direction and it won't budge. An absolutely amazing knife.

Of course when it comes to getting work done and the abuse they can take, I'm sure the ranking on these knives is totally different. But I'll leave that rating to those of you who actually work with these knives daily and heavily :)

Any opinions on these three knives and how they compare to you is much appreciated!!

I have the BM Bone Collector, full size in the green & black G10. It is one of my favorites. The handle is made for comfort. The stock is thick but ground so that it slices with the best of them. I can't believe it flies under so many people's radar. I'd rather have it than the other two you posted any day of the week.

I have the 561, the standard PM2, and the small G10 Bone Collector.

Each is a wonderful design and highly recommended.

Your descriptions really nailed it -- well done and thanks!

Glad everyone enjoys the review :) Nice to hear your opinions as well! Thanks!

I have the large Bone Collector in G10 I found it had a few sharp edges but overall it is an awesome knife I carry it more now than my Para2 but my ZT 0200 is getting some time now too:) if you want THE solid feeling knife.

The para2 (in fact, the Digi-cam/Satin blade) and the 0560 are probably my two favorite folders I own right now. Great review, and I agree with your assessment pretty much. I've been eyeing that exact BC for a while too. They are just great looking knives.
