How not to handle it

On the 4th, I thought I might do a little grinding, very dull mower blades. On go the goggles, then out with the side grinder and a couple of good files. Hot as heck in the shop, so I turn on the fan. Bad mistake. Fan blew a metal fragment into the itty bitty hole in side of goggles. Did not hurt at first, thought I got it washed out. Soreness continued until night. Then I remembered the magnet trick, cleaned the magnet and whoo hooo, got a fragment out. Still sore, so I thought, Oh it is just scarred, will heal.
WRONG!!! I had an appointment anyway this am at eye dr. He immediately saw a fragment embedded in center of cornea. He plucked the sucker out, then informed me I had a rust ring that he had to debur out. Took what looked like a dentist drill and drilled a hole to eliminate the rust ring. Oh, how I wished I had sought proper treatment and instead of enduring what I thought was pain. Now, I am putting antibiotic cream in my eye hourly and hope it heals over night.

Moral of story,
No fans blowing directly on your face while grinding,
Seek proper treatment by skilled Dr.
Don't think you can man up and deal with the pain.
Get it checked out,

Just my two cents, take it or leave it,
Jim

Welcome to the suck, hope you get better soon. Did this once with a glass sliver that found its way into my eye. Don't wait for medical care when it comes to your peepers.

Just glad you are OK. I have had 5 eye surgeries since March. Eyes heal very quickly, but it can mess with your head when sight is a risk.

Doc said this was much worse than cataract surgery, I am having that done on Aug 3rd, so glad to hear that. I survived this, cataract will be a breeze.
Sucking it up. :)

Wow that sucks. Glad you still have your sight!
I took a hit to the brow with a bokken (hardwood sword) and 3 months later, a bone chip drifted into my eye socket area. I woke up one morning and my eye was swollen shut. The doctor said the swelling cause pressure that could have permanentally dammaged my vision. A minor surgery later and I was on the path to recovery. Don't mess with your eyes.

Wow! glad you're in the clear now!

Been there done that but I tried to tough it out for four days.I thought it was better and then it would start blurring again. On the fifth I went to a doctor he asked how long it had been there and I told him it happened yesterday. He laughed and said, yeah right! I couldn't drive for a week without, two count them, two pairs of sunglasses as the glare killed me. But I had to go back to the doctor for three days for him to pick and check my eyes. I don't do anything without glasses anymore! I was lucky as it could have cost me the vision in my eye all becuse I was in a hurry.

Shit like this is why I chose to not get Lasik surgery. I'm glad I wear glasses every waking moment.

I wear my full face respirator from the moment I walk into the shop untill the moment I walk out. my eyes are too important to risk them wearing only glasses or goggles.

I don't wear a respirator unless I'm grinding non-metals like G10, CF, or Micarta.

Jeez. Remind me not to play with your friends!

Had a similar incident happen where a metal shaving circumnavigated my glasses. I went to urgent care - the dumb doctor said there's nothing in your eye you have pink eye. When I got home I asked my wife to look in my eye and she says "you have a piece of metal sticking out of your eye" WTH. She drives me to the emergency room, they try for a half hour to remove it to no avail, and its now late at night. They gave me pain pills and a shot in the eye and said come back at 8am we're calling in a opthmalogist. The opthmalogist got it out in 20 seconds using a micro dremel with a rubber wheel, I left with my sight, an eye patch, three doctor bills and some more pain pills.

Protect those peepers peoples.

I felt your pain, that drill nearly made me have to change pants, I never in my life imagined letting someone debur using a mini dremel tool in my eye. I get chill bumps even thinking of it. Glad you made it out with your vision. Mine is better this morning, Yesterday, I had to put a antibiotic cream in my eye every hour until bedtime, by the time I went to bed, that ooze was running down my face like tears. Wait, maybe it was tears. I was fortunate, going to industrial supply store this morning for full face protection. And no more fans blowing my way, except from the back.

As a pipefitter who often has to use 4 1/2" grinders in tight spots I have been there multiple times. Glasses and a face shield are best. Sometimes the crap will bounce off something so it isn't just line of fire. Nice thing about belt grinders is the crap is always going the same way and a good water bucket underneath absorbs most of it.

Here is another tip I learned the hard way. Brush your hair out with your eyes closed when done. One time everything was fine all day, then taking a shower that evening an eye started bugging me while I was rinsing the shampoo out of my hair. Ended up in the emergency room getting a piece of metal out. Could have been in an eyebrow.

Also, when taking off those goggles or fullface respirator keep your eyes closed, stuff often ends up on the top ledges.

Did you and the Doc do a little dance sitting at the table both getting set up to be steady. LOL

PS as someone who USED to have 20/400 vision. Getting Lasik was some of the best money I ever spent.

My friend, I think that is unwise.

Good tip. On a similar note, I don't take my respirator off until I'm done vacuuming the bench/air filter/floor. Notice I said vacuumming, not sweeping ;)

Sorry to hear that Jim! Sometimes even with precautions things happen. Which stinks...
Thanks Allen for the concern, BTW: Etched Camp Chopper in works?????? I see that you are no longer taking orders, I hope my orders did not get lost in the tornadoes that hit. That would be a bummer for me..

I have been working on your camp cutlass. I have etched it four times, and now I need to do a regrind and re-etch my name before I can give it another go. As far as orders go I am just taking orders for forged work. But, previous orders are still good.

Now that makes my eye smile. Take care my friend,
Jim
