How not to survive !

I would argue that putting himself in that position, knowing he had that disadvantage would be a mistake.

His family didn't know where he was at? I would have thought a retired Sheriff deputy would be a little more prepared. He got lucky.

Yeah good reminder to let someone know where you're going.
Agreed. Always have a detailed plan of action (including routes) for even routine trips alone and don’t forget to bring at least one (ideally two) means of communication that are guaranteed to have service along the majority of your route.

I’m just posting that information in case someone comes along this thread later. I’m sure everyone here knows all that. :)

When I lived in Minneapolis I saw - 34 F. I did not and would not hunt at that those temperatures.
I've known people having emphysema and extreme cold puts great stress on the lungs.
As an amateur radio HAM I would like a radio and a cellphone in that case , tested in the hunting location !
I also don't remember mention of the basic buddy system .
Right now it's - 8 F in NY State and I'm staying home hugging my woodstove !! :D

Comms aren't assured in most of the valleys that are worth visiting for scenery or hunting - at least the ones I've visited, and will continue to visit, here in Colo.
If 2 means of comms were a necessity I wouldn't be able to go.
But I do agree that a detailed travel plan including the time for them to call for help (and who to call) left with a very responsible person plus preps in your backpack are prudent precautions.

Venturing out in -34 with Emphysema is really risky.

As a former EMT, I can recall to many guys trying to shovel snow with COPD related conditions, that got a ride in our rig.
