Man Dies Teaching Gun Safety

posted: 19 HOURS 19 MINUTES AGO

(Sept 21) - Learning proper gun safety can be a matter of life and death. That holds true for those who give the lessons, as well as for the students they teach.
On Friday, an Imperial, Mo., man insisted on instructing his girlfriend as to the safe way to handle firearms before the two were to travel to a local shooting range, St. Louis television affiliate KDSK reported. What followed was anything but a textbook gun safety class.

According to KDSK, witnesses said James Looney, 40, arrayed several firearms before his pupil, then demonstrated various safety features by pointing two guns to his own head and pulling the triggers.
When Looney attempted a similar demonstration with a third gun, it went off, fatally wounding him, KDSK said.

Sheriff's deputies believe that alcohol was involved, KDSK reported.

It's actually the most common type of firearm accident, in my opinion. People firing a gun they believe is unloaded at something they did not mean to shoot. Very common.

Darwinism !
Another type of teaching I really hate - Many a TV hunting show with a kid hunting has the adult going step by step , there's a deer, pick up your gun, load the gun, put safety on, aim , release safety , shoot -now !I want to strangle parents who do that !!

Really? Get out of here! I wonder what in the world was going through that guy's head? 9mm?

Most gun accidents I know of were caused by "unloaded" weapons. Teach kids early before they develop habits, it's a lot easier.

Sad, and I'm sure it's unbelievably traumatic for the girl.

Wow. talk about survival of the fittest... First thing Dad taught me was ALWAYS assume the gun is loaded even if you know it isn't. Second thing was NEVER point a gun at anything you don't intend to shoot... oops. I feel sorry for his girlfriend.

This could not possibly happen if you are following Jeff Cooper's simple four rules of gun safety. That's all you need to know, case closed.

That as dumb as the old I was cleaning my gun and it went off excuse.

You had a smart dad. I was taught that there is no such thing as an unloaded gun.

Guy's name was "Looney." Priceless.

Yep.:D

I know, I'm going to hell; but, I laughed at the story. I goddamngarantee she learned you don't point firearms at your own body...unless your aimin' to shoot your self. Pun intended.

This will end up as a Darwin nomination, especially with the name Looney. It's amazing how seemingly unrelated tidbits of information come together to really make a memorable story.
