How often do you get to do some bushcraft fun?

I live in a suburb in the LA county and there isn't immediate areas where I can play with my knives in the woods. The only opportunities I get are of course when I go camping and hiking. If its a multiple day packpacking where I carry all my gear, often I won't bring a larger bushcraft knife to play with--the lighter the better. Furthermore, many camping and backpacking areas in the Southern California area do not allow fires due to high wildfire risk. That said, my only opportunities to really test and play with gear is during car camps on larger or more developed campsites.

So I was curious as to how often you guys get the opportunity to play with your camping and hiking related knives & gear, i.e making feather sticks, fires, etc? Or for some of you, do you simply head out to your backyard?

I live 45 minutes from a couple of wilderness areas, and I spend at least 4 days a month on trail, alone or with my son or girlfriend. If circumstances keep me out of the "real" mountains, there is a State Park one mile away that I often walk to if I get the itch.

Honestly, every day I'm either carving, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, splitting wood, or something. I have two little boys, the woods is there playground. It's the greatest excuse in the world to get out in the bush.

I live in a very urban area as well, but I get to play with wood in some capacity 3 or 4 days a week. I keep a supply of wood in the back yard to practice fire craft and feather sticks while the kids are running around and playing. That time has really helped me to learn the style knife I prefer for woods bumming and the such.

I rent a place in Portland so what I do is buy a bundle of firewood or kindling and just make fuzz sticks in my living room. Makes a bit of a mess but it sweeps up easy. :D For true outdoors time I'd say I get about day a month on average. I'm out more than that but a lot of the time I'm on high impact trails and I feel it's irresponsible to do bushcraft in those areas.
