How old a knife? What is it?

Hi folks, I'm new to this forum. My wife's folks passed away and we were emptying out the house and found this old knife. It appears to be mid 1800's or could be earlier. Her family dates way back in N. England. I think the handle is bone, but I'm not sure. I could be custom or hand made by a local smith. The blade is 12.75" long and 1" wide at the butt. The steal is dark. There are no maker's marks. I did an image search and couldn't find anything like it. I think it is bone handle, but it has an odd separation, almost like petrified leather.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on age or make or purpose (boning? carving?), I'd appreciate it.

Made the images able to be seen, and you can click on them to open up the larger version on flickr.
Looks like a boning knife. If the steel is just dark and not rusted, it's likely to be a carbon steel, though don't take my word for it.
That's about all I can tell from looking at it.. I'm sure somebody here would have a better idea, though!

thanks, my wife said boning knife. There is no rust on it. Don't know why the images didn't appear... perhaps because I'm a newbie?

In order to use the tags, you need to have the link to the picture itself, not to a page that contains the picture.
With flickr, you can view the page that you tried using, and right click on the picture. Choose a size (I chose medium 640).
On that page, right click the picture. If using Google Chrome, select the 'Copy Image URL' option, and use that for the [img] tag. If using Internet Explorer, select the 'Properties' option, copy the 'Address (URL)' part, and then use that for the [img] tag.
