Hey,

I got a Mercator from my Grandad a few years ago which I am trying to age. It is all silver looks pretty old.
Its a K55 I think but it doesn't say it on the handle, and doesn't have the picture of the cat.
When you open it on the bottom of one side of the blade it says Mercator and on the other side it says foreign. On the top of the handle by the button to close it it just says Mercator (no Germany etc).
Does anyone know what type this is? Or how old it is?
Thanks!!

James

As I understand, at one stage there were other Solingen manufacturers making their own ‘Mercator’ knives. The Kaufmann factory continued to produce knives, aggressively branding theirs as the only true Mercator. Either way, OP, let’s see some photos!

Yay! Now we just have to work out when this knife was made and by whom! Kudos, btw, what a great heirloom. :)

Yeah I have no idea!! Not sure how long he had it. He was born in 1919 and was overseas during WW2 he collected a lot of things. Thanks yeah it is glad I have it

It may have come to him in due course, through his interactions with the Wehrmacht.
Yes. I’m still wondering if it might have been another Solingen manufacturer. As far as I know, the Mercator was not standard issue in either WWI or II. However, many carried them, as they were and still are bloody good knives. Therefore, any of the Solingen Mercators, not just the original K55K, may have been carried by Wehrmacht troops. Would be interesting to ask Otter, the current manufacturer. They may have archive material.
