When you got your very first knife, how old were you and what kind of knife was it? And do you still have it?

My father gave me a cheap little folding knife when I was about eight or so, I think. It has two little blades, a riveted wooden handle, and it actually says 54 Japan (Japan under the number) on the longer blade. It's only about 2" folded up. But I still have it, and I keep it in my jewelry box. (Sentimental value, I guess.)

i was 7 years old, just joined up wtih the cub scouts and my dad got me a SAK classic wtih the scout fleur-des-lis inlay below the vic shield.
I messed up the finish of the blade pretty bad the first time i tried to sharpen it.
lost it then found it again, then lost if for good when i was about 16.

its alright though, when i got my eagle, I was given the eagle scout knife by Camillus. it always reminds me of my first Classic.

I think I was 7 or 8 and dad gave me a cheap two blade jackknife, with the crimped on one piece bolster/handle set up. I remember the handles fell off it, and I lost it. When I joined the boy scouts I got a new "official" scout knife with the "be Prepared" motto on it. Made by Camillus, and I used the heck out of it. Badly worn, it now resides in the wooden cigar box of my lifes mementos.

Bought me a nice Puma Hunters Pal when I was 13/14 I think. Spent everything I had at the time on that one. Some 20+ years later ... I still have that little fixed blade (and the box) :D

Much like Drano, I was given my first knife as a christmas gift from my uncle while entering the scouts at around age 7-8. Its an SAK Spartan with the boy scout inlay below the Victorinox shield. I lost the tweezers somewhere along the line, but I still carry it with me everywhere I go.

At about 8 or 10, I got a two blade, no-name (or forgotten name) old and rusty slip joint. Actually found it in a yard one day. I had it and lost it over ten years and finally, lost it all together (the knife, that is ;) ) at about 21 years old.

..and worn down(or sharpened down)folding knife-not lockback. At 13 I took a bus across town and bought my first "real good" knife at a large outdoor specialties store; a Schrade Uncle Henry mdl.127 UH.Still have it ,original sheath and all and in excellent condition.Nowadays I can't imagine any salesman will now sell such a "dangerous and lethal" knife (especially in a large city) to a young lad as myself then(back then nobody batted so much as an an eye -and I was happy as a clam).Sad really and a poor commentary on some of the social changes in our time. :( :(

At age 6 or 7 I found a knife with the same design as the AG Russell "Funny Folder". When I was about 9 it got me out of a serious hole I had gotten into in the desert. PS. This was about 50 years ago.

I was around 10-12 I t hink, when my father decided I was finally old enough to own my first knife. It was a SAK Camper (which I bought myself). It sits on my desk at home next to my computer.

When I was 10, I was given a classic SAK. I still carry it around with me whenever I go camping/ hiking etc. It is always in my front right pocket, just in case.

I think I was about ten, but I'm not positive. My father gave me his childhood ('30-40s) knife, a Kamp King with a broken-off (circa '50s) main blade. Didn't want me getting in trouble. Worked OK as a box cutter if you levered it out with a coin. I still have it in a drawer.

My first knife that functioned properly was a cheap import lockback that came from K-Mart. Maybe $1.99. Worked OK for a kid until it dissapeared at the beach. Replaced with an identical knife that a friend had altered the blade of. The lock stopped working on that one, and I replaced it with yet another identical knife w/ broken tip from a yard sale.

Parents gave my a great SAK with the saw during all of that. As much as I still love that knife, I always liked the cheap lockbacks when I was young.

I believe my Mom gave me my first knife, and I believe it was Buck folder. I was 7. It fell in the ocean when we were on Fire Island, correction, it fell in the Bay when we were crabbing. I LOVED it. I wish I still had it. I do still have the SAK that my Mom gave me when I was ??? old.

Little Chinese lockback about two inches long, age 9. Lost in the woods, age 9 1/2...

SAK Huntsman, age 11. Used for many years then lost in Thailand age 21...

Mora 2000, age 13. Tip snapped off aged 13 3/4...

Opinel Size 12, age 14, bought from agricultural show. Confiscated by father age 14 and a bit...

There's probably a lesson in here somewhere but I can't for the life of me figure it out...

It's really tough to remember, but I think it was in Cub Scouts, so about 7 or so. Just about 50 years ago now. A cheap no-name folder. When I went to my first Cub camp I got a cheap no-name hunting knife. Both were impossible to keep an edge on, not that I didn't try. *Sigh* Nostalgia. :)

My great-grandfather bought a knife with a 3,5" clip point blade and a metal handle with a lion's head when he first came to Argentina. It was made by a company called Biselcorte that used Swedish steels and made pretty good knives in small and medium sizes.

This knife has been the "starter" knife for every boy in my family since my great-grandfather passed it on to my grandfather. The rule is, the youngest in the family gets it when his father thinks he is ready (around age 5-6 in my case) and the poor knife usually gets beaten up pretty bad (I think kids put blades under more stress than SEALs).

Then, when you're grown up and there's a new boy in the family, you fix the knife for him (I was horrified to see what I'd done to the poor knife when I had to fix it for my brother) and the cycle goes on.

Christmas after I turned 5 I got my first folding knife and a single pump Daisy BB Gun; only for use when I was under the close watch of my father of course!!
