When you first got interested in leathercraft?

I was 11. My grandparents bought a kit from an estate sale. I still have that same rawhide mallet to this day. I used to get teased at school because I wore a belt and wallet that I hand carved.

12, 1974 Mr. Pollard's shop class. And I still have the mallet and tools:thumbup:

I was 13. I ordered and made a set of saddlebags from Tandy. I only did a little bit of decoration on the front flaps because I really wanted to stitch them up and use them! I wish Tandy still put out all those great kits that they had in the 50's!

I started at 63 all alone in my garage. No classes or viedos. Just winged it and still am. KY

I started in 1951 at the age of 18 while I was a freshman at Texas A&I (now Texas A&M at Kingsville). I guess that's been quite a while now.

I was apprenticed as a sailmaker when I was 16 in the early 60s. We used a lot of leather for padding on the three corners of the sails we made, that's where it all started. I made sandals , fringed vests, guitar straps and 1000s and 1000s of belts during the 60s ;-)). Nowadays I make knife sheaths, hawk sheaths, hunting/hiking bags, rawhide hand drums and on and on and on.

Great thread topic

Best regards

I started a little over a year ago, learned the basics from tutorials from various websites and forums.

I was 21 and in a Naval Hospital. Leather craft was part of the therapy to aid recovery. That was 67 years ago and the passion is still alive and well.----Sandy

I was 33, that was 4 short years ago I started making knives, and one day I thought...."I need a sheath for this knife, wonder if I can make one?" and so it began.

50, I made my first sheath last year after I got some parts made to re-furbish a Swiss bayonet into a dagger for my daughter. That first sheath was "fugly" and I took it apart a couple of times before I got it sewed together. Now I'm trying to put together a couple of knives for my older sister who does medieval re-enactments, what I have found interesting is making the wodden scabbards for her blades.
The first one I did by hand carving the inside out with exacto blades. It was a pain filled experience. The 2nd I did today using my dremel and sanding drums. Thank God for sanding drums, ear plugs and a shop vac.
The smaller knife will be leather covered with 1-2 oz that incorporates a belt loop, the Dagger is a horizontal small of the back rig with 2 straps to keep the scabbard in place. Going to use decorative brass tacks on it to outline the scabbard also.

So far, I am up to a total of 6...I have a lot to learn and a lot of experimenting to do.
