How open minded are you?

After readings these threads for a bit now, I've noticed that people who like certain knife companies, REALLY like them. I've noticed that in posts where its general blade talk, there are always a few hardliners who will only be into one particular knife brand. Personally speaking, I own knives from many of the production lineup and like them each for individual reasons. That being said I don't know if I could solely advocate the use of only one type of production knife as all the companies out there offer great products and half the fun of being into knives is searching out new designs, materials, and knife creations that make this interest dynamic.

So how about you? Are you guys only for one particular knife brand or are you a little more open-minded?

I agree with what you have said about the variety.
It would probably make a shorter statement if I where to list the knives/companies I don't like than those I do.
In spite of my forum name.

I would say that I am open minded however, there will of course be companies I trust more than others and certainly for valid reasons. I do not own knives from all the company's out there or even near close. I would say I own as many or a little below the average person of BDF and advocate the good ones I own or on occasion ones I have handled thoroughly.

C Ben Susrool - I never noticed that before about your name, but I suppose if I could ever afford one, I may feel the same way :D .

I agree with what you both are saying in a sense that we tend to favour more what we are used to and have been able to rely upon in the past. Blades aside I guess it ultimatley boils down to what type of person you are, in that are you naturally curious and wish to test out new ideas or are you ok with sticking to one set of parameters.

I would consider myself pretty open minded considering I'm at 80+ folders. For me, it's pretty well what strikes my fancy at the time. I do prefer popular brands and do tend to go in "streaks" of brands. For instance, in the last few months, it's been Spyderco for the most part, but I had a Becker Necker, Buck 55 and Trio, Buck/Strider, Timberline Envoy and a CRKT/Kommer Kaiyuh sneak in there. Also, a couple of other "toys" - Maxpedition Versipak Jumbo, Dorcy Hawkeye, dorcy super 1 watt. I think I'm going to add a BM530 in the next week or two, as well to compliment my other 4 BM's :D The reviews in the forums help - if the knife is well built and I have cash in hand, it strikes my fancy, it's pretty well sold :) If it's a bit more than I want to spend, but still "want" like my Spydie Paramilitary (it cost me about $200 CDN up here!!) - I'll have to give a bit of though first to justify it in my mind. Sometimes, there's a clearout or a sale on one that I was thinking about, and the sale price triggers the purchase - like my Meerkat(s). Normally about $70 CDN here, but they were being cleared at $39.99 - I wouldn't have bought it at $70, but at $40, it was worth trying - turned out in the end, that it probably was worth the original asking price :D I enjoy all the styles, locks, steels, etc the various companies offer and it makes collecting serious fun.

I'm not a hard user per se, but I do cut things several times a day, and having several with me ensures I have the correct tools :D

Well I am guilty of this partly because there are some knives that I will use and stand by 100%, but that doesn't mean that I don't have others. I am one of the Strider nutz on here, and you can usually find me defending them, on one or more threads. That being said, I still really like BM's and Spyderco, and whatever else out there strikes my fancy. I just don't really like to use anything but a Strider, and my Razorback-Knives fixed blade (Razorback knives, AKA, Scott Gossman is a kick but custom knife maker here on the BFC). This is just how I am. So I guess you can say I am open minded when it comes to collecting, but not for using. Well, wait a minute, I have a custom Darrel Ralph on the way that I designed as a total user. OK after that my mind is closed. :D

I like what I like. I too am a Strider nut, they are awesome knives, and worth every penny, to me. I know I can rely on it. But, I like a lot of other knives. I am and always will be a Sebezanite!! They are fantastic knives, and I KNOW I can count on mine. There are a lot of knives that strike my fancy; Kershaw/KO, Spyderco, Fallkniven, Mission Knives & Tool, and then the Customs. I just plain LOVE knives!! What can I say?

Don't care about the brand as long as its a nice piece by someone reputable (no scamming/ripoffs)

I’m always looking to see if new high quality knives are available, but if someone asks for a recommendation I’m going to suggest something that I know from experience will do the job well.

At present I spend most of my knife money on Busses, Swamp Rats, and Chris Reeves, but this is beginning to change now that I’ve got a couple of Sean O’Hare customs on order.

As long as the knife is a Benchmade, I'm pretty open-minded about it.:D.

I am open minded to anything that says Benchmade on it. You cant really compare Benchmade to any other brand because of how diverse it is. What other company makes folders, bali's, autos, fixed blades, and semi customs like the gold class, with the quality and price as well as great customer service? :D

My favorite manufacturer is Spyderco, but I don't hesitate to recommend other companies. As long as the product is well made, I really don't care who makes it. Some of my other favorites are Benchmade, Camillus, Victorinox and MicroTech.

"Most certainly openminded - Benchmade."
"As long as the knife is a Benchmade, I'm pretty open-minded about it."

would say the same ! :D
(but as everybody here, i have plenty other brands at home... and a BM940 in my pocket !)

My pocket is crying for a BM710...
I am trying hard to resist ! :D

if its a good knife i dont care if its made on mars FWIW, imho most of the major brands make serviceable knives for utility use, its when they start making outrageous claims that i start looking closer myself.

of course i dont like some brands due mostly to aesthetics ie FRN handles, i dont like FRN handles, sure FRN handles work fine but i dont like the looks of 'em myself, so if a co. makes 90% FRN handle knives i am not gonna be nutz about them, for something me to carry anyway.

I used to be more aligned to one brand, spyderco. But I've had disappointments in the quality of some of spyderco's designs, execution and customer/repair service. Now I realized that any company can make a few good knives and I buy knives that design and execution tickle my fancy, and look to the maker for general things like overall quality, where its made and and warranty.

I tend toward Spyderco as my favorite folder brand, but they have made some real losers as far as I am concerned. The Q and the old FRN molded clip Enduras and Delicas come immediately to mind. I also have two nonSpydies in my edc group, a MicroTech LCC and a BenchMade SwitchBack. I do have other folders that I like such as the CUDA MAXX's and most of the Osborne designed BenchMade Axis locks.

In fixed blades, I have a very definite preference for my two Randalls, but I also have a number of other makes, mostly Bowies of one type or another, and a couple of re-enactor knives which include a gorgeous friction folder by Michael "Tinker" Pearce and a replica of a Roman folder by Holger Ratsdorf.

And, of course, my Patrick Barta spatha and my Phoenix Metalcrafts Gladius Hispaniensis with an Atrim blade.

I'm particular about the brand if I intend to use it as an EDC. There are some particular brands that are really reputable ;)

There are a very few knives not made by my favorite maker that I just had to have. Along the way I have discovered that I am not a collector of folders. They just don't do it for me. a folder is strictly for utility, and my Swamp Rat Rat Trap and Spyderco Native are enough for me, although I have a dozen or so other former users in a drawer somewhere.

When it comes to collecting fixed blades, it becomes an economic question. Yes. I would like to own them all, but there is never an occasion when I would not rather spend the money on another Busse.

I will only discuss Frost Cutlery. Next question. :D
