I have a few folders and fixed blades from Al Mar and love them very much, but rarely hear people talking about the brand. How collectible and what's your feelings about the brand?

The real thing costs more than I want to pay but I like my cheap black bladed Al Mar designed Kershaw AM-3 very much. :)

I think that he's got a great reputation but he is deceased and can't compete with the new instagram ringy dingy. Some of his knives, like an old Warrior, will break the bank but one of the current production models being built under "his" brand, for all their charm, are not going to blow anyone away.

Was lucky enough to get a great deal on a Fang II, but there are a few others I'd love to get that are just way out my budget.

he modern day iterations of Al Mar knives are not terribly expensive and knice pieces.

Thete is no denying that Al Mar Knives (during its peak when Mr Mar helmed it), was a brand that brought pride and joy to many a knife collector. Yes they had always been a little expensive but that was how Al Mar marketed his products. They were the start of "specialty knives".

Understandably, there are ups and downs in a business. I certainly hope that the current management of the knife company has not been overly dependant on just the good name and reputaion of a once highly prolific and influential knife industry personality who respectfully is resting in peace.

The Sere 2K is my favorite folding knife, ever. And I've owned a lot of folders. When I got mine, you could get one around $80-$100. Now they're pushing what, $250? I don't know how that happened, but they ARE great knives.

Great knives. I've had one in edc rotation since the 80's. Down to just a sere 2k Vallotin conversion nowbutlove it

The Kershaw Mar knives (made with permission of the Al Mar estate; not knockoffs) are decent knives but I think they’ve all been assisted which I’m not a big fan of. I picked up an AM3 and it’s a decent knife for the price.

Jeff Hall at Nemesis Knives picked up a bunch of un-released Al Mar designs from his widow before she passed away. He’s been releasing them under the “Mar Private Reserve” line. So far I think they’ve put out three. The most recent is kind of a take on the classic Sere. They’re unmistakably Al Mar designs done in modern materials at a reasonable price.

I think the classic lines of a Mar knife end up a little pedestrian in our CNC Titanium framelock era. The fit and finish is a little behind given the quantum leap taken by some imported brands. Nevertheless, every time I see a talon blade on a Osprey or Hawk...or the tactical beauty of a Sere...I tell myself I gotta have a real Mar someday.

I love my Sere 2000. Probably in my top 5 knives I own.
