How sharp should an awl be?

Did a search, but didn't see any talk on this topic.

The SAK awls I've seen are comparatively sharp. At least compared to the Leatherman awls I've seen.

So how sharp of a point and edge are needed in a good awl.

My LM Squirt P4 has a small awl that snaps open fairly rigidly for not absolutely locking, but it's not inspiringly pointy for punching through leather and such.

I realize that you are talking about steel awls, but I can't help but go "primitive." When working with bone awls I have noticed that sharp ones break off way too easily, so slightly dulled is better.

Sorry that it doesn't really apply to your scenario, but I couldn't help it! :)

As with knife blade, sharper is easier to work with and it is safer. Only the tip though.

PS I think Victorinox makes much better awl than Wenger, both make much better awl than on any multitool I know. This is one of the worst features of Leatherman!

The awl on the Squirt is the best I've seen from Leatherman. On the rest of the Juice models, they're an L shaped piece of metal and very blunt. The Squirt's is a tapered tanto shape. It sharpened up quickly on my DMT diamond stone.

Thanks,

Phil

I just saw the Squirt for the first time, interesting! I wonder how it compares to SOG Crossgrip and similar items.........
