How sharp should my SBT be?

Howdy Folks!

I've started using my plain edge Buck SBT police knife as my EDC, but I'm not really impressed with how sharp it was out of the box. I'm far from an expert at sharpening my own knives my hand, but I do have Steve Bottorf's "Sharpening made easy" book, and by his definitions, this thing is not even "shaving" sharp and certainly a far cry from "razor" sharp. By contrast, I have a Mayo TNT that is so freaking sharp that the hair on your arm will start to fall off the minute you click that thing open.

Is this normal? what would be the best way to make this sucker sharp enough to compete with the TNT? I'm not going to take it to my diamond stone by hand; it's too nice for what I know I'd do to it...

Thanks for any help!

I got my SBT a month ago and it was sharp enough out of the box to shave big patches of hair off of my arm. It will still shave now, just not as easily. I have a little Lansky diamond stick that I use for touch up.

According to my almost one year research on this knife - the best blade for cutting, for my kitchen tasks perfect EDC(even my combo version). No complains about sharpness, keeps the edge and lock perfectly, pocket friendly ;)

I love my SBT

Looks like you got one that wasn't quite up to our E2K standards. The Mayo is scary sharp in part due to the S30v material.

Send it in if you want us to re-do it for you.

Jeff-

Got my SBT back from the factory today, and I must say that my left arm now has a lot less hair on it! This thing is now as sharp I had thought it would be! I knew this knife could be a lot sharper than it was, and I must congratulate you and Buck for awesome customer service.

Thanks again!

-Steve

I find Buck's ATS-34 treated by Paul Bos to be exceptionally good for holding a sharp edge.
