not exactly knife related. I just purchased a fisckars pick mattock. I bought it to work on a palm tree stump. The prior owners planted a date palm in a courtyard like area by my front door. The palm was starting to lien against the house so I took it down. I cut it as flush as I could. Now my better half wants to plant some flowers where the stump is. I hired a company to grind it but the access was to small for the grinder. I checked with two rental houses and the same problem.

With that background how sharp should tHe mattocks edge be. Part of the factory edge is axe sharp. The rest of the edge is more obtuse. You can see an feel where the factory did not get rid of all of the bur.

Not relevant to the mattocks but can you burn the stump out? I've seen people drill holes into them, add diesel fuel and a splash of gas.

Too close the house. I don’t know what the prior owners were thinking when they planted this tree. I have been using stump rot on it

10 4. I had invasive palms at my old house. I removed over 40 when I moved in. They blocked the walkway to the backyard on the north side of the house. They make small stump grinders for special applications. I'll if I can find a link to show you.

The home depot by me rents them. United rentals has them as well. I dont know where your located so my advice might be regionally unhelpful.

I tried to convince my wife to do this already or to let it rot away on its own. And that is not in her plans. She puts up with me for so long so I try to keep her happy

Understood.

The thought occurred to me, the stump-as-planter could serve as an interim step as well. Over time, after planting & watering the flowers regularly for a while, the remains of the stump might eventually decompose & fall apart anyway. Don't know how long it takes for that to happen with a palm stump. But some trees' stumps will rot & break down faster than others, after the tree is cut down.

I would take the tip guard off my chainsaw and have at it, probably end up sacrificing the chain.
Not the safest way to go about it, but think that's what I'd do.

To sharpen your ax I would take it to the fine India. A Norton stone, 320 grit.. Use the. Oars side first then the fine. This will give you a good edge. DM
