I've followed advice from this forum and gotten hold of a strop from KnivesShipFree and Bark River compound, and my knives have never been sharper.

But now my compound loaded strop is becoming loaded with metal. I can see it glittering with reflected light, especially in the black compound side. How do I clean it out? Do I just color more compound on? Or is there a method of unloading a strop to get it ready to reload with fresh compound?

Any help or advice is appreciated.
Thanks.

Clean your strop with a waterless hand cleaner like Go-Jo WITHOUT pumice or other abrasive.

Nechako of knifeforums has some good vids. He explains how he takes compound off, and reapplies.

I've been cleaning my strop with a paper towel well dampened with WD-40, cleans it right up. Works great for applying abrasive compound also.

Doh! I wish I had read this earlier. I recently cleaned my strop with soapy water and a rag. When the leather dried out, the edges curled up slightly. Now when I strop, the blade only touches the 2 edges of the strop.
I guess I will have to throw it away and get another.

Plinthman, if your edge curl isn't too bad you may be able to use sandpaper to sand them down, the strop will be a little bit narrower but may be work keeping.

Plinth,
Re-soak it in water, place between some old towels and weight it down til it drys. Should be flat again.
