Hi guys,i'm a newbie just start collecting bayonets, I got this Type II AK bayonet today, and found the blade is covered by oil or maybe grease. What should I do to clean the blade? thanks all.

Pour near boiling hot water on it over and over again. Eventually you will get it all. Make sure to thoroughly dry and re oil. Cosmoline is some nasty stuff.

Acetone is my preference for cosmoline and other oil clean up. That'll wipe off fast with a little acetone on a rag. Don't get it on the grips or it'll diminish the finish. I would use mineral spirits for those if you need it. Both can be found at any hardware store for cheap.

Wipes off easily with alcohol/ethanol wipes.
Even crusty 100 year old grease on my Kulris couldn't resist.
Acetone which Starwolf mentioned should be even more effective. Make sure the bakelit grip doesn't get any since I'm not sure what it does when exposed to chemicals.

Denatured alchohol will take most anything off and will kill you slightly less than acetone-I've used it to get cured epoxy off blades, which I did not expect to work.

Looks like cosmoline. First, place unsheathed knife and sheath in a black garbage bag, seal it, a let it sit in direct sunlight for a day or two. Remove items wipe of excess and repeat if necessary. Hot water can work too, but it can be a mess, and you'll not want that cosmoline just going down the drain.

After removing most with heat, romove the rest with a solvent. Kerosene, mineral spirits, or you own concoction (google "Ed's Red"). Be thorough and get it all. Be prepared to toss towels/rags you use.

thanks for your advice, there is cosmoline in the sheath as well, how should I clean it, thanks.

Nothing to feel sheepish about. The stuff looks feels, and no doubt smells nasty.
